My sons skills are coming on and he's enjoying riding, he's using normal trainers and standard palstic platforms that came on his Hoy. It's time to get him a pair of pedals with a bit of bite, and maybe even a pair of shoes.
What are others setting their young uns up with?
I was thinking about some neutrons for mine, not sure about shoes.
Samuel (8) has a pair of 5-10 freerider kids and chromag radar youth pedals on his rip rock 20
Ours have had half decent pedals (plastic NukeProofs are ace) and 'normal' outdoor trainers. Eldest moved into proper Specialized flat shoes this year, and likes how much stiffer they are, but does comment that Salomons are more comfy...
And whatever shoes he likes, karrimor trail running shoes are good, grippy and cheap
mine are on Vans and Wellgos

Wellgo KC001 here, from China via eBay for around £15 (a quick look shows them around £20 at present).

I wish you all were my dads
One thing we found when the kids were younger was that most flat pedals are way too big for kids and they end up being chucked off the bike when they ride through ruts because their BB is so much lower than an adult bike and the pedals clip the ground.
My son uses these for when he needs flat pedals (he's now mostly rides clipless) and they were really good for small feet with plenty of grip:

IIRC, they are rebranded Wellgo ones, but they're not sold in the UK. You can get them cheaper from the far east if you can work out which ones they are though...

Maybe i am 😉
Nukeproof plastic somethings with proper pins and normal skate/multipurpose trainers. Had some dmr v6s before but they went sloppy quickly and didn't have proper pins.
My boy is on 5tens. He loves them, thinks he is Brandon Semenuk when he puts them on. Pedals are the plastic type that arrived on the bike (Commencal Ramones 20). I will look to replace when they are smashed.
I got some Halfords 8 quid metal caged ones and normal trainers...work well. She now has a new bike and I've not changed the pedals but they seem to be working well.
The two Wellgo pedal listed above are small / kids specificm, so no issues with clearance etc
Wellgo KC001 here, from China via eBay
Following recomendations on here, that's what I got for my lad as well.
Bream, do you have the Hoy Bonaloy? How do you find it? My son loves his but quickly wore through the rear rim and there is bad cable rub on the fork.
This is a handy thread actually, I was looking at Polcarb BMX pedals for mine the other day but those kid specific Wellgo's might be worth a shout I can see them slipping more on moulded plastic pedals.
Both my Girls have gotten on well enough wearing Quechua shoes from decathlon for riding (generally under a tenner a pair), they've got stiff soles and a reasonable amount of grip, their feet grow so fast there's no way I'd be buying them bloody 5-10s...
KC001 and their (quecha) trainers here too. The pedals are a good size for kids feet actually, although the pins aren't that grippy.
5.10s are standard kid footwear here.
Pedals, look for vp push compact if you can. Nice narrow q factor, composite body, metal pins.
ive found the typical oe alloy wellgos set feet too wide for kiddy hips and the pins too big/flat topped to be effective and even soft 5.10 soles float about on top.

Thanks for the replies, went for a pair of those Wellgos from China, should work well with the new Salomon trainers he’s got for Orienteering as well.
Natrix, yes he has the Bolanoy but our local riding is quite easy on bikes with generally low wear so we’ve not seen the same issues as you have.
Great recommendation qwerty, Wellgos now fitted and perfect size for smaller feet.

We got those wellgo ones above for my 5yo but he was frightened of the spikes ,so I had to take them off....back on plastic and his feet slipping when damp .pah.
