Where does everyone buy pedal inserts, helicoil or other from and/or LH threaded 5/8th x 28 tpi taps?

Ceeway are the cheapest.

Unior, Var, Cyclus etc are more expensive for the complete kits.

Yeah I was hoping to find seperate parts cheaper ... or pay more for the left hand thread ones and find generic normal thread? Also at the moment trying to avoid imports ... though I'm not in a huge rush.

"Where does everyone buy pedal inserts, helicoil or other from"

There was a time, before Covid19 , that people went to their local bike shop.

Ceeway/framebuilding.com are in the UK, £1.99/insert, £24.99/taps IIRC.

BigYan, perfect ... indeed might look at some more tooling at the same time.

Do you have a tap handle to hold the reamer/tap?

The inserts are normally too long so you need a way to shorten them (or be happy with it sticking out the back of the crank). I machine them down before installing, I have seen people grind them down after installing.

Yeah, I have several ... its just most of my taps and die's are metric except my 9/16th' ones.

Be interested to know how you machine... doing it after doesn't sound great for loktite ?

Depends what tools you have. An old pedal spindle can be a handy way of holding the insert.

I use a lathe, but you can cut or grind them.

Vices, angle and surface grinders, bolt cutters?
I expect they are springy and saws will be a nightmare?

They are going through the thinner/fluted part on a non hollow crank so a thinner than normal crank anyway. (Previously cut loads of cranks for Jnr but the immediate use is a Dad and Lad crank for the HT to just swap pedals instead of cranks) .. then I might beef up some of the older cranks he uses.

They are a solid metal tube with internal and external threads, not a helicoil. You can cut them with a hacksaw or angle grinder as long as you can hold them still without damage. You can grind it down to length.

BigYan ... Thanks again ...I'd imagined a coil so that makes stuff considerably easier.

Ah that makes me think, so before I start a related thread...

I've a set of race face cranks I'm loathe to bin but one of the pedal inserts is loose.

I thought about drilling a small hole from the back and filling the void with some epoxy to see if they can be rescued for the commuter at least.

Any suggestions on an epoxy for bonding an alu insert to carbon?
