As the title.

Being shown round by a buddy, deciding what bike to take, im very much a play rider, up, along and down, hate getting bogged down on the full sus if a majority of the riding doesn't have much gravity assistance.

Will be seeking out the more gnar, gravity orientated stuff, is it smooth like swinley (defo hardtail) or enough rough surface to make the full sus pay?

Watch out for Audi's, middle managers, and carbon full suspension bikes.

mandog +1

A heavy susser will slow you down too much to enjoy it. All the best riders there are on SS hardtails making the poncy types look silly.

Twisty forest trails, rooty where worn, some flattish some steep. HT or short travel XC FS. Cheese straws. Grumpy locals, with some justification sometimes. And tomorrow it will be absolutely rammed.

I must be missing a trick up at Peaslake at the moment as the last few times I have been the forestry work has destroyed the trails (fair enough as its nice of the owner to let people ride on it anyway) and made me loathe the place.
Maybe because I dont know the area very well!

Peaslake or rather the wider Surrey Hills (it's a vast area, much more than just around Peaslake), has a huge amount to offer.

What you get out of it is down to what you want to do and what you can find. You can easily make it an XC ride, you can path and bridleway it across the countryside, there's fast flowing singletrack, gnarly (usually rooty rather than rocky) trails, bombholes, jumps small and big, drops, downhill sections, massive gap jumps.

It's finding it all that's the problem. You need to explore and better have people who know the area. There are loads of people about though and can easily just stop to ask the way and end up tagging along. Often happens with our groups. Ask in the bike shop in Peaslake too.

People mock at big rigs there, but when you see some people doing them justice there then it's another matter. Though as far as I'm concerned there's no problem riding an AM bike anywhere even on the flat. They're do everything bikes after all. Doesn't matter, ride what you like really, it's just about having fun.

As for the forestry work, it's all on Pitch hill at present and limits the trail choices there. You need to get off Pitch and explore Winterfold, Holmbury and further still to Leith. For more obscure and DHillish in places, over onto Ranmore and there's yet more beyond.

And yeah, you need money, many expensive bikes (preferably not Specialized) and an Audi of course 😉 😀

Don't forget the cheese straws in the village shop, and a donation to the Hurtwood would be great. And please use the car parks, don't park in the village. 🙂

Santa Cruzs, Yetis, Orange Fives, Lapierres - and a lot of Range Rovers.

Personally my bike of choice would be anything from a long travel hardtail to a 5"FS bike, but as above, there is something for everyone, though I do sometimes wonder where all the guys in full facers on burly FSers are going.

Barry Knows Best has become a bit of a motorway since the recent trail work, very fast now and lots of areas where its been straightlined by idiots - but there are plenty more less popular trails that are as good if not better.
