Off to the Peak District in August for a couple of days camping near Buxton.

Having trouble finding routes so am asking here for recommendations. About 30-40km with the good descents, especially the techy ones, have seen the vertebrate (?) book but am worried it might be a bit out of date?

Not really. The trails / RoW haven't changed for years bar the odd bit of erosion / trail sanitation. The basic stuff stays pretty constant. As far as routes go, it's partly dependent on whether you're riding from near Buxton or considering driving over to somewhere like Hope / Ladybower.

What were you expecting to happen in the last ten years?
If you want legal routes then VB book is the way forward.

If not then it become much more involved.

Sorry probably the wrong phrase to use, I really have no idea about the Peak District to be honest.

About 3 years ago if you had followed advice to climb the road up to rushup edge, then descend Chapelgate I imagine you would be seriously pissed off at the route guide. It seems to have bedded in a bit now though.

I spend most of my time around Ladybower way but tend to avopid it on weekend and school holidays as it gets busy.

I've got a couple of books I can post you if you would liek to borrow them? I've done quite well from them as they have OS maps to accompany the roites but they are all fairly well known bridleway style routes. I usually find the more intersesting stuff off of these routes in random places if you have time to explore while you are there.

Some route suggestions are listed in this thread. If you're not familiar with the Peak just be aware that the climbs can be tough depending on what you're used to!

Thanks Brutal for the offer, we’re only there for two days so will cobble together something I’m sure.

Well, the Hollinsclough Rakes are closed, which I seem to remember the VB book made a fairly big thing of, but otherwise it's a good shout.

I Can’t remember the exact route names in the book but:

I’d start with some kind of loop round ladybower. The fitter you are the more often you can go and down the valley sides

If that’s work then maybe do a loop taking in Jacobs ladder

If we were rock climbing you’d have said i lead vs accept I would have responded appropriately. With mtb i might be recommending a vs to a E2 leader or V diff leader

Standard advice for MTB in the Peak.

Look on Facebook for the group called Coggers.

Ask in there.

Sorry, wrong thing to say. The following two comments are spot on and it was indeed my ire with DCC that I misdirected at you.

you had followed advice to climb the road up to rushup edge, then descend Chapelgate I imagine you would be seriously pissed off at the route guide.

Well, the Hollinsclough Rakes are closed

The only other major change is actually a positive one, the Elmin Pits ascent gives you loads more options around Potato Alley and The Beast.

What is the VP/ VB you mention ? Details would be good

Hopefully the area around Ladybower will be "open" again by the time you visit as that's a great area for a 1st time visitor.
Currently people are being asked to stay away though. Obviously some cretins are still moving barriers and going where hey've been asked not to but...

Mam Tor / Castleton could be a good choice - am sure theres a couple of routes in the VP that you could link up to get the distance you're after.

Excellent, how did you find it? Weather wasn't the best over the weekend.
