Been looking at the option of doing the PDS as most likely I'll be in France in June. Looking at what's left the options seem to be Avoriaz, Champrey, Morgins, Montriond-Les Lindarets. I'll be in a camper an so will need access to a campsite (not usually an issue) and would ideally like to be based somewhere with relatively easy access to trails and a nice place to spend a few days. Anyone got any experience of these locations ? (Also not done the PDS before but am assuming it's worth doing right?)

I'd go with being based in Morzine for a few days riding as its a good central location and downhill at the end of the day. That'll mean lindarets or avoriaz start assuming you cant get Morzine itself. Short drive to either and plenty of parking. Lindarets probably the better of the two. Probably a reasonable wild camping spot but I've never seen vans there so maybe there is a reason why not.

If you stay at Camping Le Pré at Montriond then Les Linderats is about a 10-15 mins up the hill and Morzine is a 2 min drive.
The lady that runs the campsite is a little crazy but it drains well and if you ride to Morzine it's about 10 mins up the river path.

Thanks guys, very useful, camping Le pre at montriond sounds like a good option if it's got easy access to morzine (am thinking morzine itself might be a bit rammed . ideally I'd leave the van set up so sounds the campsite would work, poco loco owner aside

You could camp in chatel and drive up to morgins. We did that last time I think.

Or is it a faff to move the van?

Chatel is a great base anyway IMO.

Chatel was first choice but must have sold out pdq , I'm guessing you have to start the ppds in the location you specify

You have to book on in the location you specify.

Chatel and Morgins are a short drive apart.

Yeah you're meant to start where you say you'll start...

Sometimes you can pick up your start packs the night before, but always first thing in the morning - when I did it there were 9 of us starting at 4 locations because everywhere sold out. We picked up our packs by car and started in Morzine because that's where we were staying - lots of people did, there was a 30 min queue for either lift leaving Morzine that day.

If you can't get a start for a town you fancy I wouldn't lose much sleep over it, you can join in with a normal PDS lift pass, you won't be able to access the feed stations, but they're mostly in town, the food is crap and there are nicer places to have lunch.

I am excited to be going to this event. Hopefully the first of many. I will be staying in Morzine but my starting location is in Torgon (now the only location available). I guess I will need a hire car to drive over there first thing. Has anyone been in a similar situation? Any advice will be appreciated.
