You don't need to be an 'investor' to invest in Singletrack: 6 days left: 95% of target - Find out more
Basically, i tried trueing a wheel last night (i've done this a handful of times over the years with successful results) but tightened a spoke up too much which blew a nipple (!) so i gave in and popped to my LBS this morning. Initially matey says no work done til a week wednesday so i ask for a nipple to purchase and informed i'd give it a shot myself. Salesman matey goes to find a nipple and takes my wheel. He comes back 2 mins later and says he can squeeze me in for delivery at the end of the day.
Now i'm thinking thats a great service! So cheers to the man and continue with my day expecting a call before 5 for pick up, thinking the LBS is great. I get a call at 5ish advising my wheel is ****ed and i should pop over to see what the deal is or to purchase a new wheel. You think this is a wheel sale ploy? A ****ed wheel would have stood out when he took it off me for a look? I don't believe the wheel was ****ed by the way, just beyond my patience following a week of sleepless nights with a newborn!
Whats your thoughts?
When you get a wheel in to true a quick glance can be deceiving. Sometimes you start looking at it properly and find it more than just out of tension and the rim is more bent than you thought on the initial ten second estimate-glance-I'll try and do it by tonight.
Also if the salesman took a look at it he might not have any idea aabout wheel truing.
An initial inspection doesn't always reveal the full extent of the damage
Until the mechanic actually starts to work on the bike/part the mechanic may not know the full extent of the damage to the bike/part, so it may well be that the wheel if FUBAR'd
As they are letting you see the wheel and the damage then the chances are that is is knackered, if they just said 'yeah it's dead & you need a new wheel' without you seeing the old one they could be trying it on
Wait and see what they tell you and what you see when you go in to see them
Did you pull the nipple through the rim? If so they are right it's ****ed.
Hmm, good points but he took it in to the mechanic to take a look. But yeah you may be right with the first glance thing.
alloy nipples and they have all(or a large portion of have) siezed perhaps ?
brass nips dont tend to explode
You can't always tell.
Sometimes, even if a wheel looks ok, it can turn out that the nipples are so corroded or stiff it becomes an economic 'discard'. If every other nipple is rounding off or bursting, it rapidly becomes costly. Throw in the previous bends in the rim (by your own admission) and the tensions could have been as far as they were going to go.
I see this quite alot TBH, and I'm always happy to explain the specifics to the customer. Maybe you should ask them to elaborate?
There again, maybe it is an elaborate ruse to extract money from your pocket.
I've got a front wheel that can't be trued. If I do the spokes snap off at the nipple end. It is nearly 9years old!
Thanks guys, maybe i've belted it a few too many times then. Not tried straightening it before though, its a year or so old and has seen some miles. I'm just too tight arsed to commit i think. 😀
LBS result - no charge! Said he was 99% happy with his work so didn't want to take my cash. 8) 😀
So it's ****ed up beyond all recognition and they've sorted it out for nothing?
result.
Nice!
