PayPal goods charges 3.4% + 20p. The receiver of the cash (seller) pays this, not the sender (buyer).
It means if you or the seller are douchebags, you can get your money back.
If you know the seller, just use friends and family as a personal payment.
But.. this is just like handing over an envelope with cash in - no protection at all.
thanks, i am the seller. he has paid but it is short of the agreed amount by around 45 pounds. is this because of the fee you mention? is it wrong to expect the buyer to pay that?
I think it should Show the amount you’ve received then if you click on the transaction it should show the fees you’ve paid to PayPal. £45 less could be the fee to PayPal.
As a seller I always factor an amount in the price to cover the PayPal fees and postage. If the buyer wants to pay less and its agreeable I ask them to pick up the fees. I wouldn't expect the buyer to automatically pay them.
As a buyer I offer to pick up the fees if the deal is good enough
In terms of who pays it, that depends on where you sold it.
I bought a frame recently on eBay and it was cash on collection or through PayPal (which automatically gives you the protection). The seller wanted cash but as the advert didn't insist on cash and gave the option of PayPal, I chose PayPal even though I collected in person.
If I buy something from the classifieds then I assume the agreed price is what the seller wants, I then add the extra amount to get the PayPal protection and the buyer still gets the full agreed amount.
As Rickon says fees apply to a regular PayPal transaction,
Note buyer protection doesn’t mean seller protection, so as a general rule never accept PayPal if someone is coming to pick up the item, ask for cash,
On receipt of the PayPal funds email, it clearly states only ship to PayPal verified buyers address by tracked shipment.
If the buyer pays with PayPal and then comes to collect an item, they can make a dispute and PayPal will favour the buyer..
(The dispute wins as you cannot prove you shipped the item to the buyer)
PayPal friends and family payment is ok if they make it and collect the item.
Never pay online for something with friends and family unless you know them ie friends or family, I follow the adidas pages on Instagram and their are some runts out there, daily occurrence someone’s been trusting and got fleeced
If the buyer pays with PayPal and then comes to collect an item, they can make a dispute and PayPal will favour the buyer..
If you are expecting people to collect then sell as collect only. PayPal would obviously not expect you to be sending an item that is collect only.
If it is not collect only then post to the buyer, even if they live a mile away if they want to use PayPal.
Even if you sell as collect only, PayPal will not accept anything as proof of collection, they will only accept proof from a delivery company. Signed receipt, photo, etc, mean nothing. An unscrupulous buyer will always be able to claim non-delivery if they pay by PayPal and the item is collected.
Cash, PayPal f&f or bank transfer if collected.

As per section 10B the seller is not eligible for protection if they hand deliver or the buyer collects ..
The problem with many sites is the buyer pays with PayPal then may ask to collect, Even if you have collect only, you need to take out the email address on payment option, therefore after the event the best option is to cancel the payment and ask for cash on pickup..
