Can't see it online but FB road cycling group says so.

Sad for those of use who grew up on his TDF coverage.

Twitter saying it too. Very very sad news indeed. It looks like his daughter has confirmed on Twitter 26 minutes ago.

Sad. Feel like I know him, such was his passion and informative broadcasting on TDF coverage over the many years.

Didn't spot your post, Al. (Could someone please report my duplicate for closure?)

He and Phil made the sport accessible, and exciting. Their C4 highlights were the tiniest scraps of TV coverage, and I devoured them religiously. Pretty sure that they, and that coverage, helped lay some of the foundations of the current boom in road cycling in this country.

Sad news, gutsy rider

On the first day in the mountains of the 1985 Tour de France, Sherwen crashed in the first kilometre before the race had left Epinal. With Bernard Hinault setting a fast pace, Sherwen had little chance to regain the other riders. He rode solo for six hours over six mountains, accompanied by a motorcycle outrider, and was over an hour behind the stage winner, and 23 minutes outside the cut-off – the Tour publicity caravan had started its return journey and had to move to one side to allow Sherwen to complete the stage. However, again, his courage and endurance were rewarded by reinstatement – he did continue and went on to finish this Tour which would be his last.

Shocking news. Bought a frame off him years ago, which I've been meaning to build up and ride again. Looks like the decision just made itself.

Never again will a rider reach into his suitcase of courage, I have been missing Sherwenisms in recent years with the new commentary team, now I will only have the past - sad.

This makes me feel really sad and nostalgic for the days of TdF coverage on Channel 4, ropey early 80s graphics and the original theme tune music.  Life seemed so much simpler back then, which it undoubtedly was, being a kid at junior school.

This, the sport of professional bike racing, has lost a good'un today.

This is sad news. I know the "Phil and Paul Show" gets a lot of stick from all of us armchair professional commentators, but as mentioned above, they were who we listened to in the days before the internet and satellite TV.

So many classic quotes . . . .

I'll miss him.

He and Richie Benaud were the voices of sport to me as I grew up.
