Getting a carbon frame soon, my first, and planning to use an alloy seatpost. Is it necessary to use a paste or lube/grease when fitting the post to prevent binding and corrosion?

Seems to be conflicting views on this from what I've read.

If it was a aluminium frame with a carbon post what would the advice be then?

As someone who narrowly realised in time that he should've used carbon paste about 3 years ago (carbon post in ti frame) I think I'll be using paste in the future. Was an "emotional" 15 minutes getting the post out millimetre at a time 😯

Paste....when you read the paste pot you can use it on all mixtures of materials (at least the £13 pot of what I bought says you can.....prevents galvanic bonding as well as reducing torque required for carbon frames.

Do not use grease! Use carbon paste. Boy did [s]I[/s] my mate get a bollocking when [s]I[/s] my mate worked in a bike shop.

Hmmm. I've had an alloy seatpost (KCNC) in my carbon FSR since about Aug 2010 & not had a problem with it. Never used any paste.

Helps the post stay put with minimal torque on the bolt in the carbon frame, and, also, with a bit of luck.... it stops this happening:

Buy a carbon seat post, it'll reduce the chances of that ^^ happening. The paste is a good idea as well

Like all these things it's hardly a guarantee that not using something will lead to problems, but your sample of one is not enough to say "you'll be fine", because you may not be. I've owned carbon bikes for 14 years and never used carbon paste. I've had a couple of seatposts get a bit stuck, but no frames have exploded and no baby robins have died.

It's good practice though, I'd definitely recommend it.
