Usually tickets go on sale in Feb, they announce the date on the website well in advance. You can register / add your name to a mailing list and they'll send you a reminder.
The popular start points sell out same day but less popular start points are available much later, a Swiss mate bought his ticket in May for Les Crossets. I don't think Torgon sold out, I've started there in 2008 and it's a bit rubbish as its so quiet but final run through the woods was one of the best of the whole event. That year we were staying elsewhere and just drove to Torgon for the start. Also I believe the most popular day is Saturday followed by Friday and then Sunday. They expanded to 3 days a few years ago to cope with demand.
