In the offing for a better pair of panniers and currently in negotiation for a new pair of thule shield @13lt each. A fair bit smaller than my current panniers at 36lt, so I'm wondering if thats enough.
Really only get used shopping, picking up a few days worth and usually it all fits in the agu ones with room to spare.

Currently the agu ones are zippied to the rack, which is far from ideal and actually causes problems in packing and unpacking, and it would be nice and probably easier to be able to unhook, fill etc etc but im just a bit concerned over the size as they might be new but i can get bigger for cheaper its more to do with fitting the thule rack which the agu ones dont really do hence the zip ties.

Worth going for despite the cost etc ?, given they actually fit the rack, and mean i cannot pack too much weight into them, and the ability to unhook them, or wait for something maybe 15-17lt

I'm just a wee bit put off by this size. i mean front panniers are normally 10-12lt so i dont want to get something that once ive paid for it is too small.
Again not putting huge amounts in, only dont want to limit myself

So what are other people using size wise ?,and do you feel that 13lt is probably enough for most basic shopping trips.

That does sound small. My standard shopping rucsac is 30 litres which isn't far off your 2 panniers. But it's too small spaces not one large one.

If you can afford it bigger will be more relaxed at the check out. You don't have to fill the things. Plus you always just take one pannier. Click on and off panniers are great for what you are describing

Isn't the answer a cargo bike?

Could you use the smaller panniers and a rack top bag as well to give you sufficient volume?

I have 12.5l Ortilebs (25l the pair) they'd likely be fine if doing 3 shops a week for one, baguettes require vertical loading.

Isn’t the answer a cargo bike?

I did look into this and took a couple of test rides, but this was last year at the height of this pandemic so stock and tests were wherever I could find them. In the end after testing a Riese and muller packster 40 i decided a cargo would be to long, probably too cumbersome and given it needed to be electric too overall heavy

Could you use the smaller panniers and a rack top bag as well to give you sufficient volume?

Thats a better possibility, one i oddly didnt consider. but will look into whats available rack pack wise. In fact I might look too make the rack pack the permanent bag and only use the side panniers when i am going a shop. gives me both options.

Spot on suggestion 😀

Thanks for that, though Im not a bread fan so i dont think baguettes will be finding their way in.. Certainly feeling a bit more positive. and the panniers colour match the frame colour ,so could be win win 😀

Again thanks all for pragmatic and thoughtful suggestions 🙂

Best advice 8) so decided to buy them. Next stop, find a suitable rackpack.

For those interested - Cost £68. Seller wasn't coming down much, but fair do's, and still a good saving from new.

Plus the match the bikes colour, so going pimp too 😀

You’ve possibly answered your own question?

I have a few different (cheap) panniers for shopping

- Some massive Bikehut ones that have lasted well over a decade with at least weekly use for the bigger shops
-Some cheap Lidl Ortliebalikes that are about half the size of the Bikehut ones, for odd trips out where the rackpack doesn’t cut it.
An Agu Yamaska (discontinued) 7l (expandable to 10l) rackpack.

Off all I used the large panniers and/or the rack-pack most of all depending on requirements. I like the rackpack’s mini-panniers that zip in and fold out. Handy for that bottle of wine/beer/cola that takes yr fancy (if unplanned when setting out for ‘just eggs and bread’)

For New Year I changed tack altogether and bought a Yak-type cargo trailer which came with a huge dry-bag. Always wanted to try these, as I never got along with the two-wheeled trailers handling (had a few) but liked the practicality.

Happy to say the new trailer has been transformatiinal/game-changer. I hardly notice it (way less noticeable than panniers for instance) and it fits through gaps wherever my pedals will fit through, so alleyways, singletrack, anything. Already have done tip run, bottle/groceries-shop. Tracking is spot on.

Remains to be seen if I keep the panniers now. Possibly not. The rackpack stays as liked it very much, and of course will not always need/wish to hitch trailer for just eggs/milk etc.

Saying that, I already foresee the trailer being used for most other shops and chores. Fun, easy, barely-discernible when riding, and with that load-space I’m always prepared/opportune for larger loads if see something or need to perform some task. I have been disappointed occasionally with a full rackpack and a need to carry more (eye for bargains)

Pictured: Bikehut’s massive panniers pictured 12 years ago on proto gravel 26er (bottom right) and more recently on 29er. Also the new cargo trailer on maiden voyage (I just chucked the 7l rackpack in it 🤡)

It’ll be fine, and if need be you can bring a backpack as well for bigger shops.

That works. I do it, but don’t enjoy it. Rucksacks = sweaty faff.

Panniers arrived and it is of no surprise that the pack and pedal rack and the 13lr shield bag arent compatible.

Seems the lower clamp on the bag is hindered by the lower support on the rack and the bag cannot clamp on there. I expect if it was one of the bigger bags it would but the 13lr is too short.

As ever theres nothing in either description to say one wont fit the other and seems whoever designs these things didnt bother to check to see if they do fit.

I think it would fit another rack, but the strap-on rack of the type the pack and pedal is puts the mounting parts in the wrong spot.

I think I might be able to fit the two together but it, as with the other larger pannier, mean it would need to be a permanent fit, which was the problem and the entire reason for buying a different pannier in the first place.

Hey ho.

Anyone want to buy a nice new set of albeit smaller panniers 😆

Ijust realised I have a pair of these amongst my collection of panniers - I doubt I will use them again.  Utterly huge.  Much cheapness if you want them

Thanks for the offer, but ive got the agu 38lt ones which will be going back on.

Its annoying but these things happen and nowt can be done so no point getting distressed over it. I'll no doubt flog them on to some else at some point.

Would have been nice if Thule had at least checked compatibility themselves before showing pics of the rack and bags together.
