I know Salsa make dedicated ones that fit on the alternator dropouts, but it's £85 and only holds 15kg (never weighed my camping kit, but that seems low).

Anyone know anything else that would fit? The dropouts pivot on the upper disk mount, so that'd be the ideal mounting point.

15 kg is 33lbs, so th weight of a fairly hefty bike... Take less stuff!

They're very well made and designed.

True, it just doesn't seem much when most others are 25-40kg.

You'd ideally want to spread sort of load across the bike rather than have it concentrated over the back wheel. 15kg out there seems more than enough to me.

What is the weight limit on the Freeload (now Thule) racks?

It'd mostly be for commuting and maybe the odd bivi. But I'm more likely to ride somewhere on tame/flat trails as it's SS, ditch the panniers in the (army green) bivi bag in a ditch somewhere then go for a proper ride. So weight's less of an issue.

Is there a guide for how much a litre of luggage weighs? e.g. if I have 2 x 25l panniers, 0.3kg/l = 15kg. Is 0.3 reasonable for touring, bikepacking (or more mundane commuting clothes/shoes/gym kit).

Not really. Sleeping bags are bulky but light, cooking stuff (and food) tends to be smaller and more dense. What's the heaviest item in your commute luggage - a laptop (better on your back) papers?
15kg is quite a decent load.
