[Closed] Pannier Rack with Ovalised holes?

I had a custom 29er frame made and when I came to fit a rear pannier rack it was off centre by 8mm.

I discovered that the pannier rack bosses were 1.5mm difference from the centre of the rear axle. If you apply trig with a rack of 400mm this shifts the centre point over the tyre by 8mm.

I contacted the company and they told me that most pannier racks use oval holes to accommodate for this difference.

I think I’m being spun a yarn as I have two other frames where racks bolt on without and cantering issues.

Hit return before asking whether brazed eyelets on a frame are usually to better tolerance?

Oval holes wouldn't Center an off center rack.

You could cant it at an angle but not centre it.

I've never seen one with oval holes so I'd dispute that most come with them (we have 7 pannier racks of varying quality and brands in this house alone )

What I have done is just used a couple of spacers to centre racks out

Or do you mean the bosses are at different heights. ? Same thing although oval holes would solve this I'll still dispute their comment that most racks would fit.

Yes. The left boss is 1.5mm further up the stay than the one on the drive side. As a result it skews the rack. If I fit the rack to my steel Niner it sits dead center.

What a load of rubbish. You can probably sort it by filing a pannier rack hole oval, maybe down on one side and up on the other to make it level. Not great but it’d be quick and would work. Just get a rack that has a bit more metal round the holes.

1.5mm isn’t much out but if it’s an expensive custom frame I’d expect it to be perfect.

Your posting history suggests titanium? I'd speak to the supplier and see about having a refund or a full fix/replacement.

I'd expect the mounts to be parallel

They might be sugesting something like the Topeak racks with the silver flat conenctors to join the rack to teh bike. Where they connect to rack there are slots the biolts go through so there is a lot of adjutability, plus the connectors are bendable.

If it's who I think it is them I'm really disappointed. I was seriously considering a fatbike frame from them/him but this has put me off. Not just the manufacturing fault, but the response.

Interesting - just taken delivery of a titanium bike which has a couple of niggles, and I'm getting no response to my polite enquiries.

Don't think it would be the same company, but obviously not just me. (Bearing in mind only 2 of the Ti bike companies I contacted originally even bothered to reply to my emails asking how I could give them several thousand pounds)
