Hello all,
I think I've convinced myself this is the camera for me.
i.e small enough to carry good quality, good introduction to a DSLR to learn from.
It would be my first step up from a not very good compact.

Can you let me know if I'm on the right track or let me know what you think.

Willing to spend about £400

Not technically a dslr but a Mirrorless Interchangeable Lens Format camera. But other than that you're on the right track.

In case you haven't ruled them out in favour of the panasonic the olympus pen (e-p1, e-p2, e-pl1 or e-pl2) are very similar. The biggest difference being that they have sensor based image stabilisation rather than lens based of the panasonic. Not a big deal in itelf except panasonic don't make stabilised primes (fixed focal length lenses). So with the olympus the primes are stabilised, not with the panasonic. Both olympus and panasonic lens can be used on either manufacturers bodies.

The other similar option is the Nex-3 or Nex-5. They have a bigger sensor with better low light capabilities and better dynamic range (they can show better shadows and highlights than the m4/3 sensors). They use lens based stabilisation as per the panasonic.

Any of the above would be a good choice. I'd go by price personally.

EDIT: sorry read G2 as GF2 for some reason.

It's not a dslr but is a similar shape so the pen and nex are probably irrelevent.

You might want to check out the sony a33 as an alternative option. Bigger sensor, better dynamic range and low light performance, sensor based stabilisation and a wide range of used lenses available. It is a bit bigger though.
