Anyone tried it? What do you use on the morning instead of bread? And what do you replace the pasta with?
Cheers.

bacon

and bacon

seriously.

did 80 km in chaingang on the cx after a bacon only breakfast a couple of weeks ago without any trouble. much of the point of paleo/primal is to switch over to burning fat instead of carbs.

Damn they are sold out of mammoth meat at the local supermarket 😉 Plus It's not the protein I am worried about (dogs are paleo aren't they?) it's the carb that are a PITA

FYI http://www.marksdailyapple.com/what-does-it-mean-to-be-fat-adapted/#axzz2BeVBMpb7

you're in france right? then salami-type sausages are good too. scrambled eggs are my most go-to breakfast. sweet potatoes are a 'safe' carb, but I've been amazed how little carbs I need even for big bits of cycling now.

What do you use on the morning instead of bread?

Food.

Lots of paleo eaters don't have breakfast at all. I think you're supposed to eat within 30 minutes of waking, or just not bother. I'm not doing paleo, but iDiet/slowcarb is pretty close to paleo, with added legumes.

For breakfast this week I've had a pepper, spinach and chorizo omelette a couple of times. Yesterday, I had a fried egg with a couple of slices of ham and some fried prosciutto. This morning, I had bacon with boiled egg and a couple of slices of chorizo.

And what do you replace the pasta with?

Food.

Paleo is pretty much just lots of meat and veg, with some less sugary berries.

Because you don't need to eat lots and lots of carbs.

can definitely recommend reading this:

http://www.marksdailyapple.com/#axzz2BeWSuufP

miketually also speaks the truth. you'd be amazed how few carbs you actually need for sports if you adapt to eating that way.

That fat-adapted link is really interesting, thanks b17. Pre-iDiet, I'd crave a chocolate snack mid-morning but that's gone right away.

http://eatingacademy.com/how-a-low-carb-diet-affected-my-athletic-performance

interesting too - full ketosis and still performing at a high level. There was a runner who won some big ultramarathon event recently on a very low carb plan too.

Mike, the more butter/coconut oil I used in cooking and made sure to lick up the less other hunger I had and the more weight I lost. unbelievable really.

I'm not eating differently to lose weight, but I've been amazed at how my asthma symptoms have pretty much gone to nil. Could just be the odd weather this summer, but could also be not having any dairy.

Cheers for that link, really interesting reading!

I wonder how that would affect a HIIT training program though.

Flageolets

"Chickpeas" is my usual answer to "I have this meaty veggie thing that I'd normally have put with pasta as a default, what shall I use?". Or a tin of lentils.

Roasted sweet potato, butternut squash, carrots and/or parsnip replaces potatoes.

BEANS!!

Get used to them.
I've found the energy from pulses quite, pure.

My pal has been full paleo for months and is regularly putting in 50-70 miles rides and smashing his PB's
I'm getting back into paleo after a bread & chocolate breakdown.

agree that lentils are a good filler, lower carb than chick peas too. Recently discovered 'spaghetti squash' which I thought was great. Pretty seasonal I guess.

In the absence of bacon, just have a bit of steak for breakfast! I do and it's great! If you like it, a bit of liver fried in curry (madras/vindaloo) paste is really filling and chock full of vitamins.

on the HIIT thing too - I've done intervals and intense rides on low carb without issues. Your body will still fill up your glycogen stores with glucose made from proteins, just more slowly. Full glycogen stores should give you enough for an hour or two at high intensity. You can also 'carb reload' on safe carbs once in a while.

I think, technically, legumes aren't paleo. But it depends how strict you're being.

Lots of good recipe ideas at http://nomnompaleo.com/

http://thestonesoup.com/blog/ isn't paleo, but most of the recipes are slow carb and there's some great ideas there.

Juan, cheap jambon cru fries up nicely for a blt, so I reckon you'd appreciate that.
Although I'm pretty sure that you would find the real deal in Antibes; the place is full of rosbifs.

potatoes are generally regarded as ok in limited quantities, certainly better than wheat-based carbs.

on the primal site you can find a graph suggesting under 150g carbs a day for your general wellbeing.

I follow a diet based on an understanding of evolutionary science. I think it’s more important to eat, move, and live according to how humans are designed

From Mark Sisson's website.

Does anyone else think that his understanding of evolution could just be a little limited. 🙂

Prof Tim Noakes says 50g a day, IIRC.

True that. I didn't look at the prices, thats an impressive mark-up! I get 400g for under a fiver down this way.

Paleo is hunter-gatherer so anything that can be gathered including unrefined grains. My compromise breakfast when I tried the PD was natural müesli with lots of chopped up fruit.

I failed after a few weeks as I soon found that one day training on PD was fine, two days were hard work and by day three I ground to a halt. You could always try injecting insulin to cram in the glycogen from a carb-poor diet to help recovery but I felt that eatuing pasta was a more healthy alternative.
