On the lookout for a new summer packable jacket. Ideally replacing a Gore paclite type thing. the showerproof cheap things don't cut it. if it's showery I just put up with a bit of dampness.

requirements are:

lightweight and packable
waterproof for a decent soaking.
under £100(!), if it's under £50 even better
not fluoro.
not a sweatbox (although I acknowledge summer+waterproof=sweaty)

what's out there?

I reckon this is the classic 'pick two' from lightweight, waterproof, cheap.

Breathability is obviously heavily linked to metabolism, meteorology and activity.

Good luck.

Just bought one of these.

Not used it yet, but the numbers (20k/40k) suggest it will perform well. It's very packable.

I'm incredibly sweaty anyway, and it's been quite some time since my old paclite gave up. I've managed with a cheap as chips showerproof for the little riding I've been doing. but, if I'm going to get out, I'll need to brave the Scottish summer and that involves rain. My winter jacket is way too thick to be used in summer, so something lightweight would be OK.
Looked at the FS260 race cape from Endura, as it doesn't necessarily need to be MTB styled, claims to be waterproof, has DWR coating and is taped. not sure how waterproof DWR coatings are, guess it's moved on significantly from the old pertex days.
so i may have answered my own question, but wanted to get an idea on alternatives.

Outdoor Research Helium 2 jacket is £100 in size medium and looks like a good option. Just ordered the updated version for £140 but the earlier version still looks great and I think packs down even smaller.

I managed to buy a Rab Downpour Eco from  Cotswold for £70 a few months ago.

20k/20k breathable, pit zips, 320grammes.

Mine is orange and grey, many other colours are available.

Get drunk and buy something totally over budget! It’s what I did recently and I’m well impressed with my idiocy. Took my Gore Shakedry for a test ride yesterday and it’s an amazing piece of kit.

I have one of those - I'm not convinced it's waterproof, but it's very thin and light

I got one of those Endura MTR's, as I was after a jacket for summer. As over the years it's had loads of great reviews on the forum and it was reduced. I've yet to use it, but if it performs anywhere as well as my Singletrack jacket it'll be brilliant (ST is a less breathable version), & it definitely packs down well.
Cyclestore also have the "pull over" version of the mtr for a little less money and a slightly less offensive colour mtr pull over

I got one of these a few months ago, only used it a couple of times so far but it's a decent bit of kit.

Over budget I know, but if you're going to spend £100 it's probably important enough a purchase to make sure you get it right. That's how I justify all my over-spending anyway 😀

Gore-tex shake dry is perfect except for the price, if you see one for £100 let me know! I bought one 2 years ago in a black Friday deal for £120 and it is easily the best waterproof jacket I've ever had.

I use a Montane Minimus (Pertex Shield) but not on the bike as it's very thin and won't survive crashes, hike-a-bike and gritstone-paste erosion. Not fully convinced of it's waterproofness though but over an appropriate base and mid-layer it's fine to take out in case of showers.

For biking I have a cheapo Madison which is well vented and cheap enough not to cry about when it gets battered. If the shit really hits the fan I have a decent survival bag to hide in.

what kind of rider are you, XC effort on the hills and get hot, or a steady pootle everywhere,

the endura MTR on cyclestore is a good shout or the
https://www.wiggle.co.uk/endura-mtr-spray-pullover £50, but now nearly sold out.

the proper endura mt500 jacket is for year round so not as packable compared to the MTR (mountain race) gear

i got a gore C5 GORE-TEX INFINIUM Hybrid which is best of both worlds, softshell and gtx panel shoulders arms, but over budget

The Endura MT500 is really good. Used it this weekend in the New Forest where it was properly biblical and was bone dry.

I've got a Shakedry as well, but really careful about where I use it.

That Endura Spray Pullover was the worst sized product I've ever bought. Ordered an XL and it was barely a medium so returned it. They've only got a small in stock so unless you are an 8 year old i'd ignore it.

I have the Endura MTR emergency shell, a pared-down version of that one linked above.

It's really good, keeps the water out and isn't too sweaty. Not quite as good as my Rapha jacket, which was twice the RRP, but close enough.

I've used mine a couple of times and it's worked well, especially considering that sweating is the one part of bike riding where I am above average. Available in purple as well as orange. Size up if you want a relaxed fit.

that's the first time I've seen peter storm and breathable in the same sentence.

Will take a look at what's been suggested. for reference I use a 3 layer altura jacket for winter, normally with a medium thickness base layer underneath, unless it's <0deg then I get a woolly baselayer on and what would be classed as 'spring' full finger gloves.
I'm naturally pretty warm, so the suggestions for 2.5 and 3 layer jackets, have me a bit concerned about overheating in balmy 15 degree Glasgow summer.

the Galibier looks nice. would love a shakedry though...
cheers all.

I have an MTR, I've been lucky that I've not had much need to use it as a waterproof but it gets a fair bit of use as a windproof. But I'm pretty sure it is waterproof.

I'm tempted with the Rab Kinetic, a waterproof softshell. I have the Rab Phantom pull-on that use for running. it weighs nothing and works great. Id be a little worried about branches on the MTB though.
