Any Pace owners out there with the sliding drop outs on their frame - where do you have the drop out positioned? I've got a RC529, the owners manual says the frame is designed around the shorter chainstay, which is how the bike comes set up and they don't recommend extending the drop out to maximum (so, er, why have that as an option?) but tyre clearance seems a little tight (29er 2.4 tyres) so I was planning on moving the drop out back and was interested in what others had done and how this affected the bike. Thanks.
I have a RC529.
Clearance can be a little tight but in my limited use so far I prefer the way the bike rides with the dropout forward.
so, er, why have that as an option?
Because if you run singlespeed (as I am), you need dropout adjustability to set the chain tension.
If you do need to slide the dropouts back, just be aware the they can foul on the rack screws - so it's best to just remove them (the rack screws).
Another RC529 owner here. I run the dropouts all the way in and run 2.4/2.5 tyres. This winter hasn't been a mud challenge in Surrey but I ran it like that through axle deep slop all last winter with no problems.
Thanks - all good to know. Is the difference in handling quite noticeable with the dropouts out?
Same 529 all the way in, never moved them, as above great for SS will try when i purchase some new knees,
PS Dont forget to check and nip up the slideout bolts frequently, even if you have used locktite..👍🏼
Those who are running their RC529 singlspeed:
What ratio are you running?
Is 6.5 mm enough adjustment to tension the chain?
What crank length are you running?
What fork travel are you running?
I'm considering a Pace RC529 as a singlespeed, but the seemingly small amount of dropout adjustment and low BB are putting me off.
A chain link is 1" ie 25.4mm so it should be enough.
Std ss ratio is 32:17 or so for 29er. I don't think many worry about crank length.
I used to have a pace RC627 that I ran single speed.
It was great but I found that I had to move the dropouts nearly all the way back to get chain tension.
Then I found that you need to check the bolts every few rides to keep them tight.
Then I discovered that the dropouts themselves are quite delicate, and can easily be mangled by the square nuts not seating properly when adjusting the chain.
Overall the dropouts are a weakpoint but are usable. However, they aren’t really big or strong enough. It’s like Pace designed them on paper but then never tried using them.
