Is it okay in these Covid times to overnight at the Buzzards Nest carpark? I’ve done it on a few occasions over the years and it would be handy for a night.
I’m currently doing a trip in the campervan round Scotland with the family, all nicely on campsites (fortunately booked long ago).
Our last night is on a site by Edinburgh and I had planned/negotiated a short stop at Glentress for a quick blast with the lad on the way home. After scaring the pants of myself at Fort William, it would be nice to do something I actually enjoy.
But now we could do with getting home a bit handy for a few things. So I was thinking of leaving our site early and heading down in the evening, spending the night and then “the boys” get up early for a blast, leave wife and daughter asleep. Down by 11 and home.
Haven't done buzzards for a while but we parked up overnight in the inners car park a couple of weeks ago with no problems.
I'd go for innerleithen too, it's only a short walk to some nice places for food and refreshments. It's only 10 minutes down the road from GT
But then why not do a loop of the red at Inners, could do a couple of the easier (very fun) down hill runs too.
Or if you've got your heart set on GT then maybe try the campsite in Peebles.
You can ride the very pleasant cycle path to the GT bottom car park or ride up the - rather steep - path up Janet's Brae.
I love inners, probably my favourite Single trail in the UK. But I promised him GT as he wants to ride it now he’s a much stronger rider. He was probably 12/13 last time and was hanging on the back of the mates we where with , he’s 15 now, probably stronger and faster than most of us now (**** that happens quicker than I thought it would).
The reason for Buzzards Nest is the ability to leave the “others” in bed for a few extra hours and I can’t move the van with them in bed.
We were at buzzards on Saturday. There are signs saying no overnight stays but there were several vans / campers which definitely looked they'd been there all night so you'd probably be fine. I'd always be worried about someone knocking at the door at 2am telling me to bugger off! I'd go for Innerleithen option personally with a curry from Saffrons!!
Have you tried the camping spots at Glentress Forest Lodges?
There are signs at Buzzards saying No Overnight Camping but it seems to be tolerated if you don't take the piss. Only thing to watch is the Forestry lock the gate sometimes if there is foresting equipment in the park, but that's rare.
There are also no toilets or bins in the area, personally for all the difference I'd be camping down at the site in Innerleithen with all those trails on your doorstep. Golfie might not suit but the XC over on Plora Rig should be fine.
It was just a thought, but looks like it was t a good one
Lack of toilets and bins wouldnt have bothered me, our van has both 😉.
Going to just to stay in Edinburgh and get them all up early, seems the easiest option and I have paid £30 for the privilege.
Thanks
If you have a peep at Dmbins, you'll see that FC are starting a trial to allow overnight camping in the 7stanes at Dalbeattie and Kirroughtree. That pretty much says you shouldn't do so at GT (yet).
As you say, doesn’t help me, but some real forward thinking and should be applauded.
I think you'll be fine. Keep a watchful eye on the biekes though, many thefts recently.

Am amazed DMBINS realise there is MTB outside the tweed valley

They really do serve **** all purpose and I'm laughing at their latest tactic of positioning themselves as some kind of arbiter of sanctioning unofficial trails. I guess they have to justify their existence somehow
So in the end. Left a bit early, did an evening Glentress. Camped and Innerleithen and had and early ride there in the morning, happy days.
I was worried there would be nobody there and I did t fancy staying if we where the only van there. Didn’t need to worry, must have 30 of vans.
I've had my caravan at Tweedside for 5 of the last 6 weeks.
Everything is booked solid at weekends and no one is worrying too much about a few vans parked up.
If buzzards nest seems a bit public for folk then go to Thornylee, it's a great car park for an overnight.
Just avoid Rosetta in Peebles, its garbage and I'd rather sleep in a layby.
Me and a friend car camped there this weekend gone. Was a bit moist, but a tarp between the cars kept us dry.
There was 3-4 campervans there, too.

It's a bit Hi De Hi! Stayed there once on a race weekend. The on-site pub was a bit hairy
Rosetta has been bought over yet were still selling statics up till this year, they then issued a letter telling folk to get their vans off the site as they were too old. (£500 to move it to the gate for your haulage to collect it !)
The campsite stayed open but with no toilets or showers. Even before that it was crap anyway.
Crossburn or Tweedside are far far better sites.
As has been said though, plenty are just pitching up on the car parks and no one is minding.
IME Crossburn is pretty terrible - toilets broken, rubbish not cleared away and the static residents acting like Deliverance. Kids running amok and pissed-up campers gobbing-off into the small hours.
no one is minding.
So much so that they go to the effort off putting up signs say not too.
It's probably more the case that arguing with the likes of the people on here isn't worth the time and hassle when they clearly DGAS.
Who's putting signs up?
The likes of the people on here ??
Wow.
Hmmm, Rosetta and Crossburn sound fun😉
Relations between bikers and non-biking locals in the Tweed Valley are not the best at times, but if you're only visiting for a day or two it's entirely possible to not notice. So yes, people do mind.
There's big problems with antisocial wild campers on the Meldons at the moment, and it could be easy for the blame to expand to bikers if they're also wild camping.
Its also nice to support the local businesses...
