I've just stripped down my Shimano XT trail pedals to rebuild. There was quite a bit of rust on the axles which I've wire brushed off. However I would like to protect them with something to stop the rust coming back. I know I could paint them, but I quite like the metal look - so thinking some kind of clear coat?
Any suggestions?
Is "dry them when they get wet" too obvious?
LPS 3 spray :
Castrol CL grease was also good but they don't do it anymore - was a marine grease.
ACF-50 would work too I guess
Post ride wash the bike and a quick spray of WD40. Works for the chain as well.
Acf 50 or Wurth anti corrosion spray

You obviously have more spare time than I do 😀
I thought with a daily commute, spending a few minutes treating them might be more effective.
Take the XTs off and replace with M520s. Same mechanism, less exposed axle and they're cheap as chips.
No point having pretty kit on a commuter IMO.
@bigyinn - They are on my xc bike, which I was using over winter as my commuter bike was out of action. It was the salt that did the damage that's now there. My commuter bike does use the M520's ... I should have swapped them really but didn't realise until the damage was done.
Ive recently stripped down some candy 2s,gave them a good wipe down with some gt85 that got most of surface rust off, then some marine grease that was recommended off here years ago,ive still got original tube as its used spareingly,i cant fault it.
STW answer- it's not a problem I've usually had but my commuter rusts everywhere because of salt, so I fitted titanium axles to it.
