Hi
I have a Acer aspire laptop which has suddenly started booted to a grey screen...I plugged it into an external monitor and it boots up fine so reckon it is something to do with the screen..
I replaced the ribbon cable and inverter board thinking it !might be these as I only replaced the screen about two years ago
Any ideas other than buy another replacement screen?

Shine a torch on the screen and look at it from different angles... If you can see an image but it's very faint then it's the backlight.
If there's no image and you've replaced those bits, I'm going for a dead screen, or at least something has died that would mean a screen replacement is the most viable option.
Does it have a light sensor to adjust brightness automatically? Could be that.
