New pack needed for both MTB and walking use, needs to big enough, but not too big. If that makes any sense! Able to strap jacket (jackets when with children) outside for changeable weather and/or armour for bigger days a must.
So far, the Raptor 14 looks spot on.
Am a massive Osprey fanboi. This is to replace an original Raptor 10
they gave me over ten years ago, so it's going to need to be all of teh orsum tomtrmlt me away. Is there anything else I simply must look at?
TIA
Not really going to help you much but i've had both the Raptor 10 and 14 and haven't found a pack that beats either as yet. Just go with the Osprey would be my advice.
I have an Osprey Raptor 14 which I've been using for 6 years or so. It's a brilliant bit of kit and I will replace it with another if it ever fails.
When one of the buckles failed after 4 years (I stepped on it!) I rang Osprey and they sent me two for free. Very good customer service :o)
tomtrmlt = to tempt
You knew that though, right?
Thanks for the answers so far, folks. Pretty much what I expected, thankfully!
Got a (checks shed) Raptor 14. Pretty well spot on. Will take rain jacket, tube, pump, food, phone, tools, small trail tools, great. Never felt it's too big. Helmet strap seems unnecessary until you have a long uphill slog.
Do they still do the zealot? I have an older raptor 14 and zealot and prefer the latter as it is one big pocket that opens out like a clam shell rather than 2. It has the tool bit and hydration pouch as you'd expect.
Have had a Raptor 14 for years; faultless.
I got a Raptor 10 last year after years of camelbaks, was amazed how much better it was! Not to mind cheaper...
I got a Raptor 14 about 5 years ago in advance of a British Heart Foundation SDW ride. Scuffed it one afternoon ducking through a canal tunnel in the middle of Brum on a ‘training’ ride, but apart from that it’s been faultless. It swallows camera, GPS, water, pumps, jacket(s), gloves, snacks, pretty much anything. The bladder, hose & magnetic clip thing are fine for me. The largest single ‘thing’ that’s ever gone in it, I think, was a 1.5 litre bag of dried mealworms (baby robins have to eat something). It’s been used on the bike in winter, and to a lesser extent in summer, been up several Corbetts & Munros walking; can’t fault it. But if you’ve already got the smaller one, you probably know a lot of this already.
I bought a Raptor 14 a few months ago to replace a Camelbak mule. So far I'm really pleased with it. Big, but not too big. Loads of pockets, and really comfortable. I got mine from Amazon and I remember there being a big difference in price depending on colour. I went for the cheapest one 😀
Yes, definitely, do it. I bought a 10 many years ago when I was riding on my own, and recently bought a 14 now I'm riding with the kids. Great bags, the magnetic clasp for the hydration hose being one of many killer features.
Baby robins. Peak STW!
However, something is worrying me here. Seriously worrying.
Everyone is agreeing on something. This isn't the STW way!
Another vote for the raptor 14, well thought out pack and the tool roll is a bonus
OK then, I have a Raptor 10 and it's great. However.....
Had to replace the bite valve with a Camelbak one as it started leaking and was always a bit crap anyway.
Magnet for said bite valve could do with being stronger, hose breaks loose sometimes which is annoying. Must see if its possible to replace easily
Stable, but not as stable as my old Camelbak Charge. Although to be fair that was a great design IMO, just very lightweight so not very robust.
I'd still have another Raptor though. Peak-ish STW?
I'd always but another Raptor for walking, and the fact it makes a decent big day out bike pack is a bonus. One of those few niches I'd just pay what was asked as it works for me, like Specialized shoes.
@davosaurusrex it can ping off as the hose tries to straighten itself, this can be resolved by twisting the bite valve in the hose a bit.
I love my Raptor 6, so many thoughtful details which I didn't appreciate until I bought a new Siskin8 from sports pursuit as it was cheap. I have had the R6 for years & the only issues are crash damage & that I no longer like the green colour, never had an issue with the bite valve or magnet but I think they have changed the bladder now to the one that comes with the Siskin, that is not as good as my old one & the magnet is not as strong but I only have an issue if I don't route it through the loop on the shoulder strap.
Edit to say the things that annoy me which apply to the R14 are that you need to undo the compression straps to use the main compartment (although you don't on the R10?) and the really annoying one which seems to apply to all their packs is that the excess straps don't come with a little band to bundle them up to stop them flapping about, I mean just how much would it of cost them to supply a couple of rubber bands for the straps, just mindless IMO.
Cheers.
