Need a new large (for a bike / day pack) backpack for bike and travel duties. Would ideal like something in the 35 to 40l range. Only thing in budget that was not a hiking bag I found was the ortlieb but worried it is a bit small at 30l, but the pictures make it looks huge?

Any of you have one? How well do they carry both on and off the bike?

Is the 30 l size accurate or do they come up a bit by bigger?
Any alternatives out there in the same price range? Don't want zip closures. Need flap or roll top. Needs to be tough. Simple design not loads of pockets.

Bump adding a budget. £100, maybe 120 for something really really special.

I've got an Ortlieb messenger bag you can have for £30 plus postage. Used but still watertight.

Sounds interesting. Defiantly the bigger messenger. Not the smaller velocity?

How do you find the sizing? A big 30l?

Little bit over your budget, but Bagaboo Ransel? Pretty bombproof.

You'd be hard-pressed to do better than something from Lomo:

Great value kit and a home-grown brand too

Love the Bagaboo, I've looked at it before, bags like that are the perfect design for me. I just don't think I can justify that much expense unfortunately.

Lomo 40L looks good, thanks for the heads up on that brand, I like the uk aspect too.

It's the big one and it's generously sized. I stopped using it because it was too big. It's yellow.

I managed to get a secondhand (as new) Bagaboo after a month watching ebay with a an alert. They are the best IMO, i've had Crumpler, Manhattan Portage and looked at Timbuk2 non are quite up to the spec of Bugaboo.

If you want a messenger rather than a backpack (ie one shoulder), I have a Chrome and it's been really tough. They come in sizes from 'big' to 'massive' and works really well on the bike. I used to stuff it with shopping on the way home when I commuted

No thanks on the messanger bag. I'v had one before, like them for cycling but not for the traveling part.

I do like the lomo and ortlieb style but it could do with jsut one external pocket.

Might try ebag. Problem is that the backpack style messenger bags are not very popular.

The Ortlieb Messenger Bag is plenty big. I'd seriously not want to ride with anything bigger when it's full or close to full. You can get a lot of stuff in there.
