Can anyone explain the real world of this stupidly designed system?
I can neither pull it nor turn it! And it doesnt stay in place.
Took the bike apart a couple of weeks ago in prep for bearings. i think a little jiggling of the frame and some gentle persuasion with pliers and it came apart. But there wasnt much pull & turn involved.
tried to put it back together after fitting new bearings and no pushing or turning can i do. And it wont hold the back end together either! I can pull the mech hanger inboard and it pops out.
from what i can see there’s 3 plastic lugs that might lock into the mech hanger. So possibly plastic deformed and wont latch in place?
i’ve a new one on order if orbea ever gets its act together but that aside there’s no metal lugs i can see that could damage anything and the only time the rear wheel comes off is tyre change so its no problem once the wheels bolted in. Or is it?
whats the secret to this frustratingly stupidly designed thing? There’s no way i could replace a hanger on the trail if its meant to be some simple little solution!
I believe that Pilo or someone else does a metal alternative, at least they do for some models. I haven't tackled that task so can't add anything further sadly.
If your bearings are anything like mine then prepare to! Lasted 10 rides and 280mls before half of the linkage ones had siezed.
and dont bother with Blue Seal. Had the LBS fit em and every one is out of tolerance so notchy or siezed when presses in. Fine when out. And dont order from orbea. decent price but 2 weeks and still no joy! Enduro from Wych Bearings went in and smooth as silk.
Agreed, it is a frustratingly silly design. I ordered a new hanger and twistlock fitting when I did the bearings in mine, and even then it didn't go back together properly. My LBS who are official Orbea dealers have looked at it too and can't do anything with it, but when the axle is in and its all done up tight it works fine and after a few thousand miles it is still holding together. Only problem is when you remove the axle it all falls apart again!
Exactly as mine is now! Sounds like nothing to worry about. Thanks
Had the same issue with mine. Pull and turn was actually just, pull.
The plastic lugs are meant to lock in place into the recesses in the mech hangar. Mine was knackered the first time I took it apart. Literally fell off. Ordered a new one from Orbea which went together ok but a few weeks later, when removing the rear wheel, was knackered again.
It's handy to keep the mech attached with the wheel out but once the axles in, nothing moving anyway so once the lugs are damaged, the cap is basically just a spacer.
Agreed though, poor design.
Ha yes this caused me a fair bit of frustration. Initially very hard to pull and turn but mine has now loosened up so it's easy to remove but as above it can just fall off when the axle is out. I assumed mine must be mangled but it sounds like it's a crap design.
Just ordered some blue seal bearings so that's a bit worrying. Taking the bike to the Alps soon and found the drive side main pivot bearing seized. Thankfully the rest are ok for now.
@davros let me know how you get on. With blue seal. I’ve used them before and till now they’ve lasted longer than enduro in my BB’s and Hubs.
they did feel very very tight in the frame compared to the enduro ones but then the one I did actually get the aldi verniers on seems right outer diameter.
The enduro ones however were snug rather than tight and just slipped in with the press!
