Looking at the stage 5 and 6 and was wondering how people are getting on with them.

I had a 5 29 a while back and really liked it.

Has there been any issues with flex in the rear end at all.

Finally how tall are you and what size are you on.

Thanks.

Steve.

Stage 5 - absolutely love it. No problems with flexing but pivot bearings are more awkward than older designs (special tool and you need to strip gear cable and brake hose out of swing arm).

I 6'3 and ride an XL with a 200mm dropper

Thanks.

I noticed that for the 2021 stage 5 they have lopped an inch of the seat tube length on the XL so it's now the same as Stage 6.

Worried that at 115kgs I may feel a little flex in the S5 whereas the S6 is meant to be a bit stiffer.

You don't have to remove the gear cable and brake hose without doing so

You could be right about the extra weight - I'm just over 80kg so a fair bit lighter.

As StuE says you don't need to remove cables to do the bearings but it's a lot easier if you do. Didn't fancy my chances of doing it without scratching my frame - there's a video on their website I think which will show you what we are talking about.

It is a great bike

Renton, I'm heavier than you and have had no flex issues with my 2017/2018 Stage Five - I can't see it being a problem on a newer version - its a great bike

Anyone got one of the newer ones with the super long chainstays... what are your thoughts. I can’t find much online about the 2020 model (stage 5) which would be in pole position for my next bike, we’re it not for the fact there’s no demos anywhere nearby and the chainstays are so different to anything else I’ve ever ridden

I was a bit of an Orange fan, had 5 29er and then a Stage 5. I was not impressed when my 68kg heft managed to crack the frame. Got it warrantied, and sold it on.

And I think I bought it from you - I picked it up from you at work not far from derby?

If so, bike has been ace. It’s now on a ship due to meet me in Australia in October, ready for a dusty summer.

Just hoping it doesn’t crack again!

Cheers so far guys.

It's a mix of opinions between the 5 and 6 then.

Im looking for that one bike to do it all. I bought an Orbea Rallon which was 170/160 mm travel and it was just too much bike for what I am riding. However previous to that I also had a Whyte s150 which was 150/150 and felt it was perfect for me.

I'm erring towards the stage 6 frame as there are some good deals on currently.

The other thing is that the 2020 stage 5 frame has a 20" seat post which is too long and would mean I couldn't run a decent dropper.

Have they fixed the rear suspension? My 5 used to turn into a handrail the instant you used the back brake?

BB height seems rather low on the latest ones? Or is everyone running 165 cranks nowadays?

The Stage 6 is gonna feel every bit as much bike as the Rallon, and even more so. It's 20mm longer in top tube, and reach, and it's 60mm longer wheelbase.

If you want 'less' bike, then the Stage 5 fits that bill better.

That MBR article suggests that the Stage Evo is a replacement for the Stage 5, but surely it's just the new Stage 4 ?

Cheers all.

I've discounted the stage 6 as it will be too much bike again.

Managed to find a 2020 Hightower V2 frame on offer that I've gone for.

Just means I will need to get a shorter airshaft for my 36's.

Possibly mate, black one with Alpine 5 decals.

Yep, mine's 2020. It's a great bike, very stable and a real all-rounder. Really like the riding position with the new, steep seat tube angle. If you like how Orange's ride you'll like the Stage 5, if that makes sense?

One cracked rear end and under heavy compression the rear wheel buzzes the seat tube 🤔 Best riding bike I've had other than my P7 29er
