Wonder if anyone can help with advice. Was out at Whinlatter the other day and got talking to a lad on a rare Orange Titanium Vit E Hardtail singlespeed. I liked it and it made me think that maybe I should convert my 2008 P7 to a single speed as the drivetrain is fairly shot and as I have a Five it would make a great winter bike. What would I need to convert my P7?

You have sliding dropouts - so all you need is a "single speed kit", which comprises of :

1. Cog
2. Spacers (for alignment)

You may wish to upgrade the front chainring to a 'single ring only' (no ramps, slightly thicker/harder wearing).

I also went further, and installed a "hanger-less" RH dropout.

I recommend you purchase a "wide base" cog for the rear, to stop it digging into the freehub body.

Ratio wise : I'm still on the 'recommended default' of 2:1 (34:17, only because I had an unused 34t DH chainring going spare).

If you're tempted by going fully-rigid too, i can recommend using 29er forks to prop up the front a little (see pic!)

Enjoy!
