Hi I'm new to this site and I was given advice from my brother who is a more experienced mountain biker to make this post as'm in need of some professional advice,
So I bought this 2016 Orange Five in November last year second hand from an auction site.
Upon first inspection at the time of purchase all seemed ok, I checked the common areas for cracks and dings etc and I was happy with the bike but just earlier this week while removeing dirt to obtain the frame number, I noticed a small ding type mark in the down tube near the bottom bracket which looks like to be caused from a rock strike of some sort by the previous owner.
It's worrying to me because of where it's located as it's close to the welds of the bottom bracket and the fact that I'm 17 stone plus so I'm worried this could turn into a big crack or fail completely when rideing but I'm also aware it's a common area for damage on second hand bikes.
I have had it serviced recently and the bike was inspected throughly and I was told it is fine and just has expected marks but I am a little skeptical with where the damage is located so I'm after some professional advice.
Basically what I want to know is if this damage is kind of typical for a second hand bike or is it more serious and should I replace the frame or try to maybe get a refund.

I'm 18.5 stone, I'd ride that.
The weld will extend into the material, and it looks like it's just on the surface.
As above, wouldn’t consider that an issue
I'd file that under 'a-ok'.
It's an orange five! They are not known for being lightweight. It wouldn't bother me.
I'd either put some rock protector over it or inner tube etc. Maybe a bit of paint? But in reality, it's an orange five so I'd probably forget about it and carry on riding

Because your bike is 6061 T6 it was put in a oven until all the metal recrystallised. This takes 24 hours or so. The welds are not brittle they are just like the metal every where else but thicker
Orange 5’s are made to be smashed in, get on it and ignore the chicken levers.
My old five had much worse than that and never failed under my 16 stone.
Firstly - unless you bought it from a business there is zero comeback on a 2nd hand purchase even the day after you bought it.
Secondly - even if there was you’ve left it too long to complain
Thirdly - how do you know it wasn’t you that did it? The answer is you don’t. Could have happened in transport as much as riding and that bike clearly has been ridden.
Fourthly - it’s not that bad
Fifthly - get a rock guard and keep riding.
Sixthly (that sounds weird) - don’t worry about it.
Seveth - try taking photos that aren't blurry. Get more lighting, don't put the camera so close that it can't focus, and focus on the subject. 😘
If you haven't got a least one of those on your bike you're not trying hard enough 🙂
Got a similar one on my 07 Five, been like it for years, pretty sure i've had them on previous models with no issues too.

I wouldn’t worry about that too much, most of my oranges had some kind of dink like that around the BB area, perils of the down shape/Size. I would be more worried about cracking swing arms and drop outs....
My 2011 5 has one similar on it, been there since it's first Alpine holiday. Been ridden hard for years since (now retired) and I just saw it as a badge of honour and a reminder of an amazing holiday. Even had the frame re-powdercoated after it appeared without issue.
If you are worried about it, I think orange offer a sprucing up service for a price.
Strip the frame and return it. They will check it, repair and straighten if necessary and repaint.
They come back looking like a new frame.
Thanks to everyone who responded it's cleared allot up for me, I've just bought a rock guard from some advice I have gotten and sorry if it comes across like a stupid post but I was mainly worried due to my weight,
