Right i own an alpine 160 2011 model and looking to change the headset for something else. currently fitted is a hope semi integrated tapered. has anyone fitted an external lower cup, which would raise the front a little which is my intention

Do you want to raise the frame or the bars? Is the purpose to slacken off the head angle?
If you want a higher bar and to slacken off the ha at the same time a Works angleset will be the best plan. Good quality item and as the bearing on the top is raised to accommodate it would add on about a cm ish on the bar and slcken it off by whatever you require (0.5/1/1.5 degrees etc). This would in give you the same effect as an external bottom cup.
