I'm looking at replacing my 2006 Orange 5 Pro and wondered what people recommend at the moment? Still want I full suspension but thinking 650B wheels.

What don't you like about your current Five? There are lots of options out there (including the new Five of course), but without knowing what you are looking for its hard to advise.

Another 5 with 650b wheels? (I'm the sort of rider who, if I like something, sticks with it, so may not be much help) 😕

due to the poor shock (in my opinion, lack of water bottle bosses and colour options on the five base model this is the first time in 9 years i've not owned a five.

After much dliberating i bought a transition patrol instead.

Long slack and modern features, i liked the fives new look and angles but i could't justify 500 extra for a similar shock and colour albeit the five has a very long warranty period now wich nearly swung it.

Only done 10 miles on the new patrol but it doesnt feel 'weird' it handles well considering the longer wheelbase. i only charged into a couple of corners a bit more eagerly than i wanted to. I also picked up a few strava Pr's as well which was unexpected on a maiden voyage.

After another trail bike but with more up to date kit and a bit less agricultural than the 5. It's had a good run but it's 6 years old now. (I meant 2009 not 2006!)

My 2010 Five is still great; bit of a "Triggers Broom" but revelation forks seem to have improved things. I've put shorter stem/wide bars and on this evening's ride it was simply epic. New pivot bearings have tightened things up again too.

Maybe save yourself a few quid and make some targeted improvements? The limiting thing with mine I guess is the 27.2mm seat tube.

I can't think what/if I'd replace it with; prob a newer five but I think that's a while off yet.

Well, any new bike (even a new Five) will have up to date kit and anything else is going to be less agricultural than a Five, so you haven't really narrowed the field down much there 🙂 I guess you have ruled out a new Five though, so that's a start.

I'm going against convention by not recommending what I own, but if you want a trail bike with 650b wheels, decent geometry and a less agricultural look you could do worse than a Trance I reckon.

I've got one of the very last 26" Fives and its brilliant. I bought it just to see if the hype was deserved and I reckon it is. If I were to change it (and I probably will in the next year or so) then a 650B Five will be top of the list. Would build it up myself though as I don't think the Orange builds represent great vfm.

I did think just about a few upgrades but buy the time you've spent some cash on them you might aswell have bought something new. I agree the 27.2 seatpost is limiting too!

I'm another on one of the last of the 26" Fives and loving it. However, unlike the other posters I'm not really tempted by the 650B version. Still, we're all different. The one I tested just felt like a slightly heavier, slightly less fun version of the 26" Five. If I wanted an Orange with bigger wheels I'd be looking at the Alpine Five or maybe the Segment now. Mind you, that was the Mk1 650B Five. They've made a few tweaks to the latest version, so maybe it's as good as the 26" Five now 🙂

But I thought you'd ruled out the Five; hence my Trance recommendation. The Trance will fill the same role (versatile trail bike), but with nice modern looking hydroformed tubes and a suspension system that isolates you from the trail.

Bird Aeris looks good in the mid-travel bracket.

A lot of the good bikes have crept up to 160mm travel now though. I reckon 150mm rear is good for the UK personally.

I have recently got an Alpine Five and I love it. I had a Patriot previous to the A5 and I am really glad I have got the A5. I was toying with the idea of a 650b five but once I rode the 29er my mind was made up. Bare in mind I also commute on my bike and I find the bigger wheels help with the mile munching!

I've still not heard of anybody who has ridden an Alpine Five and a Segment, but it would be interesting to hear how they compare.

Owners of the Alpine Five (Five29) seem to love them, but they don't seem to be selling that well. In fact it looks as though they will be quietly dropped from the range this year, leaving the Segment as the only 29er in the Orange range. I've no idea whether that is because the Segment does everything the Alpine Five does only better, or whether it is just plain old market forces though.

I think it would be a shame if Orange dropped the A5 as I think it is all the bike most people would ever need. Having said that the Segment is probably as much bike as many of us would need. For the riding I do I recon a segment would have been enough bike to be honest. If the A5 has been a poor seller then I can't understand why. It feels spot on and is such a 'right' feeling bike to ride.

I really rate my 2012 Five. With 150mm Marzocchi coil forks it‘s massively competent and really playful. My riding has improved hugely since I got it as it just gives me so much confidence to try stuff I would otherwise mince around.

However, I recently built up a Banshee Prime – mainly cos I wanted to see whether a 29er would be all that different. The idea was always that I would sell either the Orange or the Banshee, depending on which I preferred.

Only been riding the Prime for a couple of months, but I’m blown away at how much I prefer it. It’s more to my liking everywhere, not just where you’d expect the bigger wheels to shine. What really surprised me is how much “lighter” it rides, how manoeuvrable it is, and how happy it is to get airborne. And when you point it downhill, it really is like throwing an anchor off the top of a building. The clichés about arriving at trail features sooner / faster than you’re expecting are so true.

How much of this is down to the more modern forks and shock I couldn’t say. All I know is I love it.

I know you’re looking 650b, not 29er, but I’ve heard that there are family similarities across the Banshee range. Might be worth looking at a Rune or Spitfire.

Anyone want to buy a Five?
