From the Orange website in relation to running 2 x 10 with a bash guard:

If you are going to use this set-up we recommend using 24-32T ring sizes. Using a larger outer/middle ring is not compatible with our frames.

I was a bit taken aback by this, since in my experience 32T is a bit easy to spin out so I prefer a 36. Anyone running a 36T on a Five?

Yeah got a buddy of mine doing it the bash was a pig to get fitted though but it does work fine.

36t fouls the pivot.

Changing the BB spacing/chain line sorts it out.

I run 1x10 now.

22-38T here on my Alpine 160. Bit of a jump I realise - does take some careful tweaking of the front mech, but it does work. Certainly not fouling on anything. Mate runs 22-36T on his 2011 Five S with no problems.

The 36 sometimes fouls the pivot when you are changing to/from the granny. However sometimes it doesn't, I have read many mixed experiences of this.

When it does foul the pivot the amount it fouls is normally very small and after a couple of rides it has eaten enough of the pivot arm to stop fouling it but not enough to make the pivot arm dangerous.

An extra spacer drive side can sort it but clearly changes the chain line.

I run a bash with 34/22 on my 2010 Orange 5. The chain fouls on the swing arm (on the weld by the pivot) when changing gear if the bike is unweighted (i.e. during maintenance) but it is not a problem when riding. I've not tried a 36 or larger.

I run a 24/36 on mine and have had no problems with the chain rubbing on the pivot/weld, the chain does come close to the pivot/weld when shifting, but there's definitely no contact at any point.

Chainset is a 10 speed XT 770 triple with 24/36 and bash, standard chainline (50mm), frame is a 2011 model.

Different bike but same principle, my heckler has wear on the pivot from where the chain has passed through using 22/36. Tweaking chainline/not giving a s*** will solve the issue 🙂 probably the same on a 5. Just don't expect sympathetic warranty for worn/damaged pivots.

To quote orange:
" 34 fits all the frames all the time, 36 fits some frames some of the time and 38 doesn't fit any."
Poor show really given that standard 2 x 10 is 38/26.

running double + bash with 22/36 on mine (2012 xt chainset if that's any help). ended up sticking a deore 36t middle on so I wouldn't be wasting money should it foul - it didn't so it's stayed 🙂 (that said, bought a 2x10 chainset before realising it wouldn't fit 🙁 ).

as goatster says, depends on how much weld's been used - some frames work, others don't. mine's got a fair bit of clearance even with a 36.

Same happens on mine, just. I noticed a couple of months after fitting the 36T that some paint had rubbed away from the weld.
