I've never kept a record of how much riding I do in a year, I'd like to try in 2021.

It needs to be faff free as morning commutes are a rush, I've 3 bikes I'd use, I'd like to see ride distance, duration, ascent, average speed & a total accumulating over the year. I'm not fussed about segments or it being public.

I've used Strava in its free version previously, Endomondo will be no more in 2021.

What do you recommend❓

Free Strava will still do all those figures won't it?

*Edit - and as below, if I for some reason forget my GPS I can still record in my phone.

Strava for me. I like that I can use my Garmin or my phone. I just ride and record, and it's all there. Don't really have to do anything. Even if my Garmin fails to connect to my phone to sync, it'll do it next time.

I also think Google Fit can detect when you are riding. Just leave it in permanently and it knows when you're walking or riding or whatever. It can sync to Strava too I think but I don't know how good the results are. I don't think it tracks riding as well as Strava does.

Will the free Strava add all my ride totals together to give me a running total / end of year total?

If so how do i see this info?

Yes it will give you a weekly total, monthly and yearly. If you have a HR monitor it will also compare the relative effort of your ride.

Are you sure? i just had a play & it appears to be asking for a subscription for that info.

Training>Training Calendar

I thought this was still available on the free version, it's just Training Log you can't get. So no weekly total, just monthly/yearly.

I'm pretty sure you'll get the basic stats in free Strava, you don't get leaderboards, training logs, routes.

If you are willing to shell out £10 a year Veloviewer will take data from Strava and present you with a huge mountain of stats to while away the evenings.

Training>Training Calendar

Gives me hours and total distance, nothing else.

I'm willing to pay a subscription to Strava, just wondering if there's any other options out there.

+1 for veloviewer if you like getting into the stats. I've enjoyed the tile grabbing feature of that to mix it up a bit.

Can you add the Elevate app extension? That should still grab those stats in the free version.

If you already have a linkable Garmin device then the Garmin Connect app will show you all of the info you want. Just go into Activities\Cycling and you get day, week month and year data with totals.

From a convenience point of view I'd use whatever Garmin watch you like plus connect. I use a Fenix 6 and it works seemlessly with my phone. Start the activity in the watch, ride, save it and your done.

Integration into Strava is also seamless of you want to use that instead or as well.

Good point - Garmin Connect does lots of stats and is free with a Garmin device.

It'll also sync. with Strava & Komoot and has a useable Reports function.

Opentracks if you're on Android., It's actually pretty good.

https://f-droid.org/en/packages/de.dennisguse.opentracks/

You won't be uploading your tracks to a third party website; instead storing them locally. You can export all rides to a .kmz backup file and then share this back up to your home computer.
There'll be no social aspect to it though.

FitoTrack's another one very similar to that above. Offers a visual display of where you are. There are more settings on it though so it offers more features and more of a learning curve.

Garmin connect if you have their device. Though I’m not sure how it works if you are commuting with say, just your phone or a smart watch etc that isn’t garmin.

I paid for strava for years and it was worth it but now I’m mainly running there’s no point, and the free version seems to have fewer features than it used to. Some handy activity views have gone, for example. I’d like to move to something else but i have every kilometre I’ve run or ridden since about 2009 on strava- none of which I’ll ever look at again I suppose...

Get yourself a more basic Garmin - e.g.20 or 25. I had a 705 for bigger rides/mapping, then a 200 for commuting - boots up fast and you are off. I still have both, but just asked santa for an Explore.

Just discovered FitoTrack can import multiple GPX files so it's feasible to request a full Strava data request. They provide you with all your old rides as separate GPX files which can then be imported into FitoTrack if you so wish. Seems pretty full of features imo. Nice free and clean app too with no pinging of strange IP addresses, other than Openstreetmap but that's obviously to get the map tiles to show where you are.

If you go to the phone app and click on “profile”. This will give you your weekly view that can be swiped through and also year to date. Not sure if it’ll do monthly, but pretty easy to work out.
