Heloo,
Heading up the the N Lakes tomorrow, but the weather looks bloody grim! Rain & strong south westerly winds.

I'm thinking Whinlatter as the trees will provide some shelter, with an option of descending down the grisedale pike trail towards Keswick if the wind is not too bad. Otherwise maybe Borrowdale Bash as it is quite low level?

Any other recommended routes?

The bogtrotters version of the borrowdale bash is superb technical riding, afterwhich we went on to Whinlatter and did the trail centre stuff. A big day out by my standards and one of the best I've done.

What's the bogtrotters variation, just roughly, I know the area well enough to work it out forma few references?

Round the Back of Skiddaw might be a good route to try as well, Latrigg and Holme Woods and the bit over towards Blencathra, but hard to make a loop of it without going on the road. Not a bad out and back though.

Borrowdale Bash would be my first choice,To avoid lots of walkers I would start at Grange and do the Terrace (North)first.

Then via Keswick,Watendlath,Rosthwaite (Decent via Frith wood is best)to Seatoller,at the end of the village turn right, just before it gets steep through some big Slate Gated pillers,This is a permitted cycleway onto the Classic Graveyard decent to Castle cragg,Its a technical climb and is a great way of gaining some height using a shallower gradient. From castle cragg its a long decent back to Grange with a handy cafe and river to wash the bikes in. There are lots of local variations of this ride, but it can be done in a morning no problem, maybe Whinllater in the afternoon?. enjoy the ride. 😉

I see, I've never bothered with the loop around Derwent Water and I've always carried on a lot further up Honister Pass and ridden that trail to the North of the road that drops into the BT route. Love that descent into Grange!

I can't really believe people are suggesting doing the Borrowdale Bash on a saturday in August, and doing a variation that involves riding on narrow footpaths!

I did the non-cheeky route on a weekday out of school holidays and it was still heaving with walkers.

Edit: oops maybe this was posted last night eh? 😳

Point still stands though.

Sorry Paul, it was an assumption on my part, in that, because some of the bogtrotters route is naughty, I assumed that the original/usual route is probably all on bridleways and roads, but I don't really know if I'm correct in thinking that. 🙂

I've never seen the route do that loop around the Lake, I think the rest is bridleway or road though. Love the descent out of Watendlath!

Yep I wouldn't suggest doing the technical footpath to watendlath on an august weekend. Rest of it is bloody good, not tried the frith wood descent before but walked it last year and it looked like it'd be great. We normally do borrowdale in themorning then blencathra blast in the afternoon, bit exposed but it's only a short route with a great downhill to finish - just watch out for those blind corners 😳

Do the Bash in the morning followed by the Threlkeld loop, to include Lonscale Fell and the Latrigg descent. I did that a couple of Saturdays ago and the descent was almost empty, at 2.30PM.

Yep,all of my described route is on Bridleways, or permitted cycleways,The "Older route"involves the road climb up Honister pass before turning right onto the Cumbria way, still a nice option, but at this time of year, usually busy with crazy motorists that cant drive up steep hills! 🙄

The Bogtrotters route is spot on,and apart from the bit from the cattle grid to Portinscale, not too naughty 😉
