You don't need to be an 'investor' to invest in Singletrack: 6 days left: 95% of target - Find out more
We went to look at a new office yesterday (converted factory on outskirts of light industrial estate) and the developer is V bike friendly and has asked for us to submit what we want him to install.
The area we have is around 4 x 4m, is a steel framed slatted-timber 'outhouse' style building which will have key card access (to those who require it) and is otherwise a blank canvas. It will be weatherproof but sadly not entirely 'indoors' if that makes any sense.
There will be approx 150 people on site and we imagine around 10% might use the bike facilities. We've got a few committed roadie commuters in our office so security is top of our list.
I've done some research and know what I like, but does anyone out there know of any new and innovative solutions that I perhaps haven't seen?
There is also the scope to spec out an adjacent internal drying room/changing room, and money doesn't seem to be a concern there either...
I'd love to hear some different ideas. Cheers
4m x 4m is going to be tight to fit 15 bikes in, with clearance to move around and get in and out. I guess something like those double stacked slide out tray things like they have at train stations against one side might get close to that.
A track pump, bolted to something secure would be v.useful.
Squeezing 15 bikes into 4mx4m is going to be quite a challenge though. The 2-up racks they have at Cambridge train station would help, but they are quite high - 3m?
Get a Park Tool Trail Head Station in there, great for quick maintenance!
We've got some 2 up racks at work. They are huge, not sure you'd have room to slide the top rack out in a 4mx4m space.
IP67 socket to charge lights or ebikes, place to hang wet kit, track pump as said above. A wee heated drying cupboard is nice too.
I think you need to make something bespoke.
I helped a friend fit out his new bike shop a while ago. We used scaffolding poles held together by joints with Allen key bolts to create racks. They have sliding hooks on for the front wheels to hang off.
You can put a ball bearing on the Allen key bolt to make it so you can't remove it easily
Something along these lines, I think

The racks here are good. Key code on the door, waterproof cover.
But it's a secure site anyway, so could probably leave bikes leaning against a wall somewhere and they'd be ok (some do!)
So secure that I'm not allowed to take photos of the rack design, will try to find a link.
Pretty much this, although ours are double the length and we have 2 of them.... with a key code on the door. Not entirely sure why the whole thing needs to be transparent myself.
Damn expensive aren't they?!

Some nice ideas here too - http://cycle-works.com/product/custom-made-solutions/
Drying room is easy - space to hang stuff properly and a heater!
Is it tall enough to hang the bikes from hooks? Not sure how you would lock them.

This is near my old office

Custom racks - not sure you could get the density you're after though.
You'll probably have to accept that you can't get all the bikes that might show up on a summer's day into the enclosure and supplement it with additional outside storage. Then have a system for giving enclosure access to the people who ride most frequently.
Drop out of the top 15 and your pass is automatically deactivated and the bike goes outside in the rain 🙂
I just reserve my space by having my Kryptonite on the big bar. 🙂 I think we must have space for about 80 bikes. Good that.
