Hey all, thinking of buying some Halo Freedoms - just wanted to get a gauge of general STW opinion. Any experiences valued, thanks.
I have two pairs of Halo wheels. Tornado's and SAS. I like them and don't way too much but I'm not one to bother about that. Hubs can interchange from 9mm to 20mm but the 20mm spacers aren't captive and a bit of a fiddle putting the wheel back in again. Thats my only little moan about them.
I like mine. not too heavy, pretty chunky and pimp in white!
From what I've seen/experienced, absolutely bombproof rims/wheels at a very good weight. Had a mate do a 10ft drop to flat (no exaggeration) and were still perfect afterwards
The guy who builds my wheels has never really commented before on the rims I've used (mostly Mavic and DT Swiss) but when he did a Halo Freedom rim recently he made a point of telling me that (a) it felt good to build and (b) he reckoned it had built up into a really strong wheel.
Having never built a wheel myself, I didn't know you could 'feel' how a wheel built but this chap must have done thousands over the years so I reckon he knows his stuff.
A downside (for me at least) though is that they're drilled for Schraeder and I prefer Presta.
i've got a pair, they're a bit too heavy for long xc rides although i have done it and i didn't die, they're strong enough for Dh racing if you're smooth.
I have one (29er) but the end bits of the QR hub are much bigger than normal and wouldn't stay in the inside drop out tabs of the On One 29er fork so i'm going to have to change the fork or the wheel.
I bought it as it'd be an interchangeable spare with both my HT and FS which run QR and Maxle but can't see me using it much. Shame as it's looks very nice and certainly seems burly. I have heard the rear hubs tend to fail pretty easily though although i have no experience of this.
29er Halo Freedom rims on ProIIs here. A very stiff and sturdy rim, if a bit on the heavy side for a 29er. Would imagine a good 26er rim.
I recently got a pair - Feels a little heavier in use than I expected, but nothing like as heavy as the SAS rim. They do seem pretty strong and stiff though...
thank you 🙂
They're an incredibly strong rim. Mine have had 18 months of DH only use, and are 100% true and round, despite the front being dismantled and rebuild with a different hub in that time. I build wheels myself, so I do check and re-true all my wheel fairly frequently, but the Freedoms have barely needed even a tweak.
Great to build with, which is usually a fairly good sign of 'dependability'. Relatively heavy though, I think probably a fair bit more than the claimed weight. I've just put 721's on the bike below for the time being, and I'm sure they 'ride' lighter.
Also, they decals are a bit crap, and the painted white is soft as puppy poo, so they scuff up and look a bit shabby quite quickly. Other colours are available though.
Think the decals have been improved on the newer ones...look less like cheap stickers now.
