Reba's have oil in the lowers also so what's the open v closed bath in relation to.? I know the damping is done in a cartridge with the rebas but people always talk about bombers lasting ages because of the open bath so can someone explain in simple terms please.
thanks
Bill
RS and Fox use a sealed cartridge and about 10ml of oil in the lowers for lubrication.
Marzocchi lowers are full of oil which is does both damping and lubricating purposes. THere's loads more oil, can't remember the heights off the top of my head, but 50mm below the top of the stanchion rings a bell (when the forks are compressed.
They last loads longer because they never run dry and the seals are probably better.
They're also heavier. Great forks if you like to neglect your bike.
Cartridge forks have the damping oil sealed in the cartridge, with 5-15ml of lubricating oil in the leg. The two oils never meet.
Open bath forks have a larger oil volume that lubricates and damps. This circulation also keep the oil cooler and more consistent. However, more oil increases weight.
Sure I serviced some rebas/revs years ago and put more in the lowers after referring to the manual but must have been mistaken ....maybe it was the mx pros before them that I'm thinking of. .many thanks for the explanation ..much appreciated.
Oil bath coil all day long if you can live with the weight. More riding less servicing, nobody ever said ‘I want my fork to feel more like a cartridge air fork and I’d like to service it more”
What jamesoz ^^^ said, basically. That’s why I’m still using coil sprung Marzocchi 55 RC3Ti’s.
