Seems this is a known issue, the pump opening up while on the frame. The rubber collar that's meant to hold the handle down doesn't seem to be a tight enough fit. On my hardtail the other night my pump opened up on every run. On my full suss it's a much rarer occurrence. The heavy weight of tool in handle will apply a greater force in this regard I guess, but I'm not changing that - it's half of what the thing is for. It's a shame because the setup is so good otherwise.
Anyone solved it in a better way than tape? Have I got a duff seal? I replaced it about a year ago, and my replacement one was never better than the original. The issue is now worse than ever.
Another solution that springs to mind is to design and 3D print something in TPU, but that's an expensive option. Or perhaps a drop of Sugru might supplement the existing seal?

Absolutely. Put the bottom part in the clamp and the handle is above.
My first pump and tool suffered really badly from the weather due to being on the frame so my new one goes in a bag.
I have mine with the tool & pump handle at the top facing up the down tube.
Only issue I have had was when I hadn't pushed the tool back in and landed a drop and the tool went about 10ft further than I did lol
Mine did this on the Trans Madeira last year. Mid stage there was an awful metallic cracking/rattling sound after landing or hotting something, I thought I'd snapped my frame! Looked down at a safe (ish!) moment and realised it was just the pump handle banging on the top of the down tube. I just shoved it all back in at the bottom of the stage and it was fine for the rest of the race, and for a few weeks after until I got another seal. It's been fine ever since too.
As said above, I'd definitely contact oneup about it, they're pretty good about things like this I find, I'm they'll have a solution for you.

I’ve had a heap of free replacement parts from them. But my gear has a tough time. Pretty good customer service.
I also bought pump seal orings from a local bearing place rather than entire kits: 1.5mm x 22.5mm

First couple of times mine did i, I didn't notice till it had whacked against the (carbon) frame a few times and its damaged the surface. Pretty poor. Now I make sure its taped.
Funny, when i first mentioned this issue on here about a year ago, literally nobody had the problem so i thought it was me just making up problems....
Well, I've contacted them. So will await a response. Meantime I have added a single thickness of electrical tape under the seal. That takes it from too loose to hold on the trail to perhaps a smidge too tight.
This happened to me for the first time last week, then I realised I'd put it on upside down, so the pump handle was facing towards the bottom bracket. Clipped it round the other way, and it's been fine since.
I was told to keep the seal really clean, as well as the bit of the pump body by a local shop, and to make sure to slide the seal up before gently closing the pump, so that the seal sits properly. I guess over time, bits of dirt and general wear will make this less effective?

It seems that a slightly thicker and deeper rubber seal would solve the problem
I’ve never had the issue but I’ve just learnt that people mount their pumps with the handle facing downwards?? Surely that’s just wrong 🤷🏻♂️
Gah, this is happening every descent, now that I've switched to the larger pump (with a CO2 cannister and EDC tool stuffed inside).
Even cleaning it up isn't making any difference, so I'll need to get it sorted, as I was just getting used to riding without a bag on short, local rides.
Is that with the handle facing up or down? Not surprised that people with the handle down are having issues, you're fighting gravity there
Yup, run it tool up and never worry again. Mostly for fear of loosing the tool but it seems it's the least hassle all round

I put a section of inner tube around mine, where the rubber grommet things is. It seals it a little more and seems to stop it from opening. Also, i find if the plug is kept in the air valve, this will also stop it form opening. If it cannot draw air in, it cannot open. Also, a section of inner tube around the valve (like a rubber band) to help stop the plug popping out.
I'm running it with the handle at the top, so it's the right way up.
I'm wondering if it's because there is more mass in the handle now, with both a tool and a CO2 catridge, as before there was only a cartridge in the smaller pump I had before. I've emailed OneUp, but not had a reply yet, so hoping to get a response soon. Thanks for the tip about wrapping sections of inner tube to keep it closed, but having spent a good wedge of cash getting this (about 6 weeks ago), I'm definitely at the 'return it and give me a new one' stage.
I'm obviously not running it inverted - the handle still comes out (extends) even when the pump is the right way up on rough downhill. I emailed them when this thread first came out and they got straight back to me with an offer of a new redesigned seal kit. Unfortunately due to one thing and another I never followed up this kind offer and now 8 months later feel its probably a bit late so tape it is!

I run mine under my top tube in an accessory mount the extra 'bottle boss' bolts. Due to the interference with a water bottle I run mine (marginally) head down so the chamfer near the pump head clears my bottle.
Saying that, I've had no issues with the handle extending, in nearly two years and lots of stuff like Peak, Wharncliffe, Golfie. However a lot of that is steep so the pump is probably still head up on the bigger impacts!
