I'm looking to get back into MTB after about 6 years (and an additional 4 stone) off.
I notice CRC have what seems like a good deal on Cube Reaction TM hardtails, specifically this one here.
The problem is having been out of the loop for so long I have no idea what's good and what isn't anymore - all I know is it has what I think I need at a reasonable price. Help me out STW, is this a worthy rentry into hobby?
For what it's worth, I was more an XC rider before my hiatus, although wasn't averse to riding a trail centre every now and then...
I saw that deal too (2018 TM at £899 down from £1599, with SLX/XT and Fox Rhythm to save people clicking). I think it's a decent buy, especially if you use the cycle2work scheme. Also I think it'd be fun out the box whereas many bikes at that price point are crippled somehow (not that £900 is peanuts).
That looks a brilliant buy.
Don't think you'd go wrong with this. It looks very capable and good spec for the money. The 2.6 wide tyres may be overkill if you were doing mainly xc mile munching but that would be a fairly inexpensive change.
I also spotted this, as a mate is after a entry level HT.
Check the TT length as Cubes can be shorter than the current trend for long&slack.
Thanks for your input guys - most appreciated.
I did have reservations over the Magura brakes, although they seem like the fronts are 4-pots. Since when was that a thing?!
Fox Rhythm - Is this their entry level kit now?
The Fox Rhythm was entry level ish I believe however it has the grip damper that turned out to be really rather good and now the Grip2 damper features on the top end Fox Factory forks.
The XT/SLX drivetrain will be good, I use XT 11x1 and it's been really robust and shifts well.
The Raceface gear is basically what used to be Easton, Easton is now Road and Raceface is MTB but it's the same stuff underneath different logos.
Looks like a bargain to me. There's probably £350-400 of forks and £200 of drive train on there.
I really don't think you can go wrong that.
Even if you don't get on with the frame (unlikely), you'd be able to transfer most of the bits over to another frame.
Great offer go for it as said before you cant go wrong with that - I would say move quickly or at least put deposit on one.
Fox Rhythm
Faaaaaaaaaantastic fork. Have a Fox Rhythm 34 on my 130 mm hardtail and the 150/150 all mountain bike. A blast!
Magura brakes
Maybe good. Depends. Had an Magura MT2 and this was ... pure crap.
But a complete brake kit, front and rear, DEORE will cost in "winter sales time" less than 80 GBP....
If MT2 is used - swap quickly to Deore (brakes and discs).
... had a quick glance at the CRC offer:
2.6 inch tyres - THAT's FANTASTIC.
This - in combination with the 130 mm fork: great, great bike!!!
I run 2.6 inch tyres on my all mountain bike (Magic Mary). Love them! Turns the bike into a "grip monster" (and not a racer) and puts a fat smile onto your face....
Looks like a great buy.
I'll take that as a resounding "yes" then!
Something just appeals to me about oversize tyres, it's not quite fatbike territory but hopefully will give a similar feel.
I've now placed an order thanks to you unruly lot.
They tend to be called the wrong size rather than being too short. The 18" is really only 16" tall, so the reach is about right for a 16" frame.
20 inch frame now out of stock. That didn't take too long.

Haha. Yes.
This deal was good. With CRC you have to be quick. Great buy!
The 22 is out of stock now too...
