I have noticed that the nipple has sheared just on the hub side of the rim leaving the spoke hanging out of the rim, I have removed the spoke and the wheel isn't too buckled, can tell as it's my pub bike which runs v brakes and the pad only slightly rubs when passing the missing spoke and I have them set up pretty close.

Obviously this has weakened the wheel but will I die riding to work o the road tomorrow? up and down kerbs is the most abuse it takes.

Rim is a 32h Mavic x223 or something similar

It should be ok for a bit but i wouldnt leave it like that. You could get a single spoke / nipple from your lbs for very little and make the wheel last longer.

Yep I'll repair it need to get to work tomorrow on it, not overkeen on icy roads on the road bike on slicks, and the Covert is hard to drag to work at 5am!

It'll be absolutely fine, I've finished plenty on mountain biking rides with a spoke missing, and I'm still alive to tell the tale of how it made no perceptible difference at all (short term, obviously a wheel with all its spokes is better).

Be fine years ago on road bikes the spokes were often popping out use to bend it around another and carry on most of the time were miles from home.Just get it fixed this week some time.

I've ridden with multiple spokes missing for months and months in the past!

Might be a concern with lightweight road bike wheels, but I wouldn't worry on an MTB.
