They really are terribly sharp aren’t they. Currently sat in the urgences (A&E) at the hôpital d’Orsay just south of Paris, waiting for my eight year old daughter to be sewn up. We were out with my club on our tandem, actually stationary at the top of a climb when she slipped awkwardly. Looked like nothing, just a slight knock on the pedal from a 20 cm drop. Lifted her trouser leg to check, expecting the usual indent mark but her shin had split open like an over cooked sausage... Got her lying down, leg elevated and pressure straight on it but it took a couple of shouts to get my club mates to respond, as the slip had seemed so innocuous. The pompiers got there very quick, about 10 minutes even though we were in the woods. Got sent from pillar to post for a hospital with an on duty pediatric surgeon though. The pompiers were great, happily discussing the merits of being clipped in versus cut to ribbons. I had to take a sick bag in the back of the ambulance though, a proper vomit rocket!
Eléanore should be out soon, after having sucked down as much nitrous oxide as her lungs can possibly manage. No dancing tonight at the village St Patrick’s party we were going to, but fish and chips and a hot chocolate should set her up. I just hope she gets back on a bike quick (her own bike has all plastic flats exactly because of this...). Hope you’re all having a good weekend and not giving too many pedal libations.

Poor little mite.

Yeah, my legs have permanent, erm, "character" due to pedal strikes but I just can't get on with spds anymore. They are a confidence killer for me.

Hope she gets over it fast and is soon out riding again.

I'm trying to get my partner into biking and have just bought some plastic wellgo flats for this purpose so I don't put her off for life!

14 stitches. No washing for a week or so, suits her fine. No sun for a year, drama!

No sub for a year? Really? Have thought of that. Would it damage the fresh skin on the wound I guess?

Makes the scar permanent, apparently.

In my experience it’s because kids have got ants in their pants. My seven year old is incapable of just ‘standing’. He’s always leaning on one part of the bike and balancing on the pedals. It inevitably leads to a slip and OUCH moment.

Put. Your. Feet. On. The. Ground. 😑

Hope your little one heals soon and isn’t put off, 8yr old on a tandem is proper cool. 😎😎

Hope she heals quickly.

Got scars on the shin from shin/pedal interface x2. Unfortunately both times on the same shin. Don't know what was worse, the first time the initial accident or accidentally cutting the live skin instead of the dead skin a few days later.

Thanks all. Daughter slept well last night. I usually react ok to accidents - not seen anything too horrific but I’ve administered first aid to a chest stabbing before, and I’m not scared of a bit of blood. How professional first responders deal with it on a daily basis is totally beyond me. I saw inside my daughter’s leg; not the bone I think but muscle structures and all the flesh layers, subcutaneous fat etc, her leg was wide open, a good inch. That’s kept me in quite an odd mood since. When I picked up the tandem the guilty pedal retained quite a lot of evidence. I covered it at home so the cats don’t get a taste for my children...
Anyone fancy a pair of red RF Chesters?

God, that sounds horrific. I hope she recovers ok. I think we underestimate how much thinner and more easily damaged skin can be than on adult males.

This is why I wear knee and shin pads..They make up for my general incompetence..

I still wear long knee protectors with shins guards for this very reason. Seems to be out of fashion though. Knee protectors now just have the knees protected. That's for park use. For xc I wear just elbow protectors.
