Hi,

I've bought a second hand on one vandal for commuting and the gears are a bit low.

I thought it would be perfect, however my commute mostly goes up a big hill at 5mph and down the other at 30mph and the current gearing of a 32 tooth chain ring and 11-50 cassette is a bit limiting.

It looks quite tight for a 34 tooth and super tight for a 36 tooth chain ring. I think a 36 would fit if it was one chainrings thickness further out than the current 32.

Has anyone successfully fitted anything bigger than 32?

Is it worth trying to space the chainring out from the chain stay?

On my previous gravel/ commuter bike I bought a 46 to replace the 38 but never got round to fitting it. Any suggestions for getting that to fit?

Thanks for any suggestions!

Oh, previous owners chain rust moved with wd40+ finish line wet are responsible for the chain. A less rusty chain is on the cards as well

It's an on-one, thus all specifications and sizes changed on the whim of the person who packed it. The only way to tell what fits yours today is to try something.

It looks like a nice bike mind.
Plus the chain makes me feel much better about the state of the one on my commuter, though that's probably held together by rust at this point having done two winters, it only has 5 days to go before it reaches the arbitrary end of winter bike date and is swapped for the road bike then given a proper overhaul over summer.

Lovely looking bike. It's designed to be an off-road bike, so suspect 32 might be the maximum, certainly doesn't look space for anymore.
I'd be interested to know if a double chain ring is an option on that frame or is thst prevented by seat post angle?
A double would let you keep the 32 and possibly have a bigger chain ring further out, but you're then into new front mech and shifter.

To be honest, I have no idea, but would be interested to know what dictates if a front derailleur is possible on a frame.

Thanks!

On one have said 36, which looks really tight.

Good call on the double. I have an old 10 speed front mech, shifter and road triple chainset in the spares box- never thought I'd be going back to a double!

The seat angle is 74, but then the rigid form doesn't seem to be as long as a the 130mm fork the bike is designed for, so I'm not sure what it actually is. Normal ish?

I'll see if the shifter fits.

Worth a try at least. Even if you do get a 36th in there, it's still going to feel under geared for a quick commute.
