Can i fit 650b wheels to a 26er if I use slick tyres?
I want to convert it to a super commuter. My vision is slick tyres, guards and possibly a rack
I don't want it to look like a mtb with wheels that are too small due to road bias tyres
Should I just use some 2ins plus slicks on my 26ins wheels?
Should I buy something more suitable?
You can use 29 wheels with road tyres of you like.
I tried 29er wheels and the rear doesn't fit - I don't have any 650b wheels or tyres to try
It is a 26ins wheel frame and a Reba 26 fork
You Can, but you may struggle to fit mudguards as well. The benefit of the marginally larger wheels would be , Well, marginal.
And mudguards would make the smaller tyres less noticeable.
This is the tack I'm taking commuterising my tinbred (and saves buying new wheels and expensive tyres)
Outside diameter is the driver, so fag packet maths:
26x2.2" = 559+56+56 = 671 OD
27.5x1.75" = 584+45+45 = 674 OD
700Cx25 = 622+25+25 = 672 OD
That assumes the frame will clear a 26 x 2.2" tyre radially and that tyre height is consistant with width (it more or less is but can vary a smidge)...
I've currently got an old 26" kona which I know will clear 26 x2.1" it can squeak a 700x35 tyre but not a 700x40, add a pair of Guards it'll be 700x28 I reckon...
28mm tyres on my Scandal, in my opinion will look daft
Can I get guards for 2ins slicks on my 26er wheels which look OK as this is more than likely the route I will go
Not sure how the back end of a scandal compares to an inbred but I got a 700x35c tyre in the back of an old inbred. It was slot dropout though so able to slide the wheel back. Seatstay bridge on an inbred is pretty chunky. Not sure if a scandal is the same.
Oh yeah no clearance for guards with 35c tyres for sure
If my old scandal didn't look so nice I'd be commuting on the bugger, too
A 53/55mm guard should just about suffice for most nominal 2" slicks (I've used 28x2" Schwalbes with 700x53 Bluemels guards), or you can get 65mm and have plenty of leeway.
