Quick straw poll on the quality of On One's Paint.

I've had my codeine since last March and the paint job seems to come off/go down to bare metal from just leaning it against anything.

If I was to guess I'd say they don't use any lacquer or base layers at all in their jobs although they assure me they do.

Anyone else had any issues?

My Cotic X has survived two years of daily abuse and being locked against a Sheffield Staple most days in the work bike shed. It's starting to show some very minor scuffs. My old mk2 Soul want too bad and my newer Soul 275 is powder so doesn't count.

My Inbred and Fatty (both pearlescent white) shed paint easily. Something aa simple as wrapping a lock round the post while riding a to b round town could and does rub a chunk off.

I'm with Rorshach on this. They're good bikes made to sell cheap, something needs to give. Paint isn't a bad sacrifice...

My mates old inbred is pretty good but the year old Parkwood less so. Cheap as chips though so no surprise imo.

My old OO fatty chipped easily, no worse though than the Genesis I had before. Other bikes in the house (Salsa x2, cotic and trek) all have much much tougher paint.

You pays your money...

OO/PX frames are built to a certain price point, durable finish costs more and essentially adds very little tangible benefit.

If you want better paint, spend more money, buy something fancier, They're cheaper for a reason, sorry...

Mine was v good.

Until I put it in an acid bath and stripped it back to bare ally, looks a lot better.

Inbred seems to lose paint like it's going out of fashion. Inside of the chainstay on the non drive side for example. London road seems better. Oddly the paint on the inbred Serbs quite thick, whilst the London road seems thin.

Cheap shit in being shit shocker!

As above, the paint on early Saracens was utterly brilliant!

At the other end of the scale, Mrs_oab's 16yr old Cannondale had the toughest event ever! It looks amazing, with only a few rub marks and just this year or so some staining and bleaching

I think the phrase is variable to brittle?

Mk1 456 was flaketastic
PX SL tough as old boots
C456 OK to flakey
Dirty Disco fine
Mk1 Ti 456 no paint so good

I have an inbred as my polo bike so it gets a lot of abuse but the paint has held up very well indeed.

My "that blue" 456 has held up pretty well tbh. Seems tougher than my Kinesis 5t as well.

Both though are better than my 1998 Rockhopper that flaked off big chunks of paint with every stone chip.

My raw 456 evo II is doing better than I thought it would to be fair. I was expecting it to be a rusty mess by now..

My Fatty paint is decent; there are a few chips but its been ridden a lot. I only noticed a little orange peel near the head tube.

My only gripe is that the carbon fork is just plain white, not white pearl like the frame! 😡

Are On One generally poor quality bikes? Genuine question, I was toying with the idea of a Codeine as my next bike. 🙁

Isn't it scratchcard paint they use for their frames?

It's unfair to call them poor quality, sofabear.

You get a lot of bike for your money if you choose wisely. Build kit is all bought in obviously so is fine. Frame design is usually good, sometimes brilliant. They aren't the lightest, prettiest bikes with the best finish but they're also very much less money than the equivalent bike from a bigger name.

If you buy on price alone, you'll walk away with a steal. If you're looking at equipment levels, ride or aesthetic and aren't paying as much attention to the price you might be disappointed. Corners are cut, but usually things like cheaper paint, cheaper wheels, heavy nasty inner tubes etc. Easy ish things to fix.

My oneone Fatty has seriously tempted me to get rid of everything else except possibly the cx on several occasions, and that's impressive in my book.

A bit harsh to describe them as "poor bikes".

I've got an Inbred from 2006 and a UJ form 2008. Both have been thrashed but any paint damage has been a result of me not looking after them.

Sure, my Cannondale has a much nicer finish, but the rrp was 6 x that of the inbred.

definitely not poor quality, Ridden On Ones for years now and they're great. They seem to suffer from quite a bit of snobbery on here though.

My Raw evo 2 has stood up very well and rides really nicely

My blue Codeine is pretty good i think. By no means as tough as some I've had, but compared to my fancy Intense Carbine at least the paint doesn't that any opportunity to fall off.

Definitely tempted to go raw at some point though.

My London road good paint poor frame

Inconsistent seems to be the answer!

I have 3 On-Ones, all with different strength paint jobs (one was stripped and powdercoated straight away). With the steel frames, it is the orange rust that comes out of every opening that is more a sign of cheapness than the paint!

@matt - I know in the 80s and 90s Cannondale used Dupont Imron paint, which was a big deal as the paint was expensive, difficult to paint with, and lasted forever.

Most of mine have been ok. They scuffed and rubbed but didn't chip. Had 2 on-ones, a 456, pompetamine and a parkwood. A few of them had rusty gussets but that is probably more to do with prep/design than paint.

But this may be relative as I've owned two kinesis bikes and the paint on those is rubbish.

My scandal was anodised, no paint to fall off. Thought I had it sussed, got a carbon 456 and thought hah, no paint to fall off this one either! Then the carbon fell off 😆

My recent (still current I think) white inbred and white pompino are great for robust paintwork. Previous white pompino was worse, previous green inbred was quite poor (paint).

My Mk1 Pompino was in pretty good condition considering age and distance travelled. The buyer the other week was v. happy with it.

My chromed 456 looks dog rough... Looking to get it sandblasted and powdercoated I think, Brant told me it was a rough/ready trial.

Wife's inbred is grand, but that gets a soft life.

The london road still looks immaculate but I've only had it got about 500km.

my 456 paint was just terrible - looked battered after 3 easy rides

Then again it only cost me 100 quid in the sale - At that price I wasn't that bothered

Inbred (26" wheels) - Sliding dropout, pearl white, circa 2006-ish - pretty good, only point to note was a bit of rust staining at the open end of the gussets when I sold it on after 3 or 4 years.

Scandal (29" wheels) - swapout, raw frame, circa 2013-ish - I'll be honest, I haven't ridden this one a lot but it's looking pretty good with no paint issues. Funny, that... 😉

On One Fatty - early complete build with the Howitzer BB and a Holzfeller 1x crank, pearl white - still looks pretty good, a few scuffs here and there and there's some cable/hose rub starting on the fork.

Hard to fault for the price - and I've had considerably more expensive frames with much poorer paint

Lovely lustre on the (silver) LR. Done a couple thousands kms now. Defo better than recent Giants.

Pearl white inbred still shines up allright too when it's not covered in shite.

Mate bought a very dark green 26er inbred for his boy, that looks fantastic, really glossy and no issues while he nailed the parts on.

My London Road has already got the odd rub/scuff, admittedly it's one of the shite batch with a dodgy seat tube, etc I don't really mind though. Still does the job.

Old 456 is good, but that's because the previous owner had it repainted...

The paint on my fat bike is pretty good. No chips etc in three years of heavy use. However, the London road that has been hanging in the shed unused for three months looks like an airfix kit that was painted by a drunk chimp with the shitz after dropping acid for the first time.

My inbred and Pompino were OK, although could've done with something more to protect the back of gussets, paint on my parkwood looks lovely but might be a bit soft (couple of scrapes on the paint, but then again I've had one or two scrapes that haven't removed any paint, I'll get back to you in a couple of years.). PX carbon frame fine so far (but treated nicely so I don't really intend to find out).

The finish on my Ti 456 was fine, it was just the self destructing back end that I wasn't so keen on.

I had a Holdsworth Singlespeed road frame and the paint is a joke, tightened seat clamp, all the paint around bolt fell off, all around the drop-outs has gone. First few rides totalling about 100 miles caused about 16 stone chips to it, only have to look at the paint and it comes off, then the decals look like they came from an inferior Airfix kit.

2007 Inbred 29er in 'sand': bit rusty in places but only at gussets and minor welds like cable mounts- no problem yet. Doesn't chip too readily.
2009 Inbred 26er in 'Barry White' (deep lacquered black with gold flecks): absolutely spotless, not a mark on it and it has done thousands of very hard miles as my main hill commuter.
2014 Fatty in pearl white: Spotless again, lasting better than I expected. In my experience, they're as tough as most others; Genesis, Cove, Dialled, Kona.

The paint on my parkwood is pretty poor. Doesn't chip but dulls and scratches really easy. I don't really mind though as it's a great bike.

My brothers 45650b paint (also black) exactly the same.

Given I really don't like the graphics on the parkwood I'm super tempted to strip it as above. That looks ace.

Think it obviously varies, as it has a bit with mine:

Parkwood - stripped and re-sprayed grey from new as I hated the stickers
26 inbred - holding up pretty well, but it now has an easy life as a town bike
29 inbred - good but a couple of chips from rocks
29 Scandal - not mine for the first few years of it's life and looks good in green with very few blemishes

Not had many other bikes but can't say they are that much worse.

Haha, my Kili still looked new when I sold it - very well used - in 1997.

New bike was about 3lb lighter, and I bet 2lb of that was the paintwork.

Blue Codeine here, two years old, paint chipped and scratched but no worse than any other bike I've owned. Problem is its so much bloody fun to ride I keep riding beyond my abilities and that's where the paint falls off, and the skin, oh and some ribs! but its a fun bike who gives a f#?# what it looks like. Got a summer season too,5 year old paint not too bad apart from not being quite as FLOURO ORANGE as when new.

I've had lots over the years. The only one with notably poor paint was my 'that blue' 456. It was a bit soft and scratched easily but it was cheap and fun and I loved it.

Red 456 - not a mark on it, mint. Gopping blue fatty trail? - scratched when received by someone with the side cutters nipping a cable tie at a guess, It was such a hassle waiting for Yodel to deliver it that I couldn't be bothered making a fuss

I've got the parkwood just a couple of posts above (the nice one, not the ugly one).
PAint quality seems fine and happy. I've got 1 stone chip, but hey, it's an MTB.

Have always bought the raw versions of the 456 family of bikes I've owned and loved, the finish has been awesome, why more companies don't offer raw metal options is beyond me....it looks industrial, solid and cool AF.

2No 853 2006 in that pink

Some paint came off from new but I doubt I've clean them more than once so the mud/grime might hide a lot more damage

Ultimately the are a joy to ride and I don't care
