I fancy a winter/cyclocross bike with discs, but there aren't many options available, so was thinking of a rigid Inbred with 700c wheels, cross tyres, drop bars, and disc brakes.
Has anyone built anything like this before, or know if it will work/is compatible? I have already tried the 700c wheels in my Tinbred and they fit fine.
I already have a Kaffenback but would really like disc brakes, as a winter of riding has almost wore my rims out.

700c fit with road tyres, but I am wondering how big a cross tyre would fit in there (I don't own any), also wonder how the bike would feel and handle with the higher centre of gravity?

Does anyone know the links to anything on the old forum that would help?

You wouldn't be changing the c of g much as the lower profile of the tyre cancles out much of the rim size increase unless you run 29er tyres.

O-O top tubes are so long you will need a DH style stem to bring the bars back to a reasonable distance away from the seat.

Depending on what tyes you fit, the increase in BB height will be very small and hardly noticeable I would suspect.

Edit: Owenfracknell got there first 🙂

Works great. Remember 26" wheels are only called that because they're approx 26" diameter with big tyres on. 700c with skinnys are about 26".

The Inbred 456 in the picture has 29er wheels on from on-one with Conti 700x32 Twister tyres. The clearance at the seatstay bridge is fine, but you wouldn't get much bigger tyres on.

I've managed to get a 700x45c tyre on my genesis altitude.

Its one of these

What I'm wondering is would one of these fit

http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?PartnerID=79&ModelID=34662

Theres a smidgen of room left, would nt be any use if it was muddy mind.

I have been looking at the Uncle John, and that is a candidate, PX don't appear to do a disc fork though?
There is also a chance the company I work for will be running the Halfords cycle-to-work sceme this year, but I know last year I couldn't get a PX through them, and I am not sure what other CX disc bike I could get for under a grand.
On the other hand I fancy building something a bit different, as it will annoy the Colnagarello roadies I got out with.

I'm running a Surly 1x1 with 29" wheels on. I did think that only X tyres would fit and was running Schwalbe Smart Sams. But have since found Bontrager do a 1.7 29er tyre so i'd look at them, they do me fine!

what tyre is this bontrager one do you have a link too it ?

Also are you using the surly 1x1 fork on the front ?

http://www.wiggle.co.uk/p/cycle/7/Surly_1x1_Rigid_Fork/5360015622/

Thats what I've got on my altitude. As its only 413mm theres not tons of clearance.

Al, your Inbred 456 is exactly what I am looking to build, are there any problems with your toes catching on the front wheel?

Also are they road discs you are running? I assume that if I use STI's I would have to use the road specific calipers as the brake levers don't pull enough cable? or I could use Travel Agents with normal discs?

Measured my Kaff last night and its Toptube is 2cm shorter than my inbred, but I run a 2cm longer stem on the Kaff, so the handlebar to seatpost distance is the same.

Has anyone used the Genesis Croix de Fer, as it looks like it ticks all the boxes?

VassagoJay I will have to check your photo out later, as the firewall is blocking it.

I’ve also got an Inbred that I’ve got 26 x 1.25 slicks on for commuting and have thought for a while about changing to some 700cc wheels.

A numpty question – but are 29”er and 700cc wheels the same size?

Paging allankelly – would you happen to have any pics that show the clearance at the seatstay bridge please?

I would prefer 700x32 slicks if possible, are there any specific tyres you know that fit ok and any that don’t?

Thanks

Might be stating the obvious here - what about a Roadrat?

Danti - not a numpty question as I've asked the same about swapping my 700 for 29 tyres and had mixed responses of definitely not and definitely can be done - so I'm still with the 700s. Anybody know for definite without a shadow of a doubt if they are interchangeable?

The rims are the same diameter, but 29er wheels usually have wider rims.

Allan, is that a regular 26 inch on one fork on that inbred? If so what is the clearance like with a 700 + cross tyre like? Could your put a pair of guards on them do you think? I quite fancy changing the canti brakes on my cross bike for mechanical disks (already got disk IS mounts on the frame) but it also does duty as a mudguard clad winter road training bike and a bit of touring.

my friend and i have tinbreds , they take 700 x 35 cx tyres . no problem and are great fun to ride . really good for trailquests and on/off road touring . they fairly fly on the road compared to 26` wheels , and cope well with medium grade singletrack , just like a cx bike , but with added stability of straight handlebars

Paging harvey / allankelly

Do you or does anyone have any pictures of clearance at the seatstay bridge?

I'm interested in some Mavic Speedcity with 700 x 32 slicks, appreciate that they're narrower than 700 x 35 Cx (depending partly on brand of tyres), but would like to be able to see how much room I've got to play with.

Thanks

ok, i have some 700c disc wheels and I have a 26er frame 🙂

if cyclocross bikes aren't allowed at mountain mayhem, but 29ers are, would a 26er hardail with flat bars with cyclocross tyres be allowed? 🙂

this is an interesting thread for my interests... considering changing my pomp for a roadified singlespeed inbred, though may opt for the discs pomp when it comes out...

So a wheel on Mavic Open Pro would fit at the back of an Inbred?

You could always stick 420mm carbon mtb fork on an Uncle John, a la RC31. Give it the the cross bike on steroids look.

Just finished the Love/Hate 29" wheel build with 35c tyres and took these before it got mucky 😆 Loads of clearance and looks like it would take 40c + without a problem. Forks are On-One carbon 440mm for 26" wheel.
