i have an old map that was bought in the 1970,s from an antique shop... you know when you do the teabag thing on paper and it goes brown (my map is like that).....
its dated 1610 or something like that of 'west yokshire' with names of towns spelt alot differently..... could it be worth anything.. i know of an antique place in Hebden Bridge with two nice old ladies in there...think i mite take it along and see what they say... 😉

Have a look for the name John Speede. Could be worth a pretty penny if it's an original.

places like bradford is called Bradforth...Halifax called Halyfax
in the middle of the map its named ( The West Ridinge of Yorkeshyre.

sheffield =sheaffield
leeds =ledes

lots of other places with wierd spelling...
anyway then agin it mite not be worth much, but it sure is intesting to see the different spellings of such towns and cities..

to check its age, if it spells "Lancaster" as "West West Yorkshire" it's very old.

Sorry, E-A, but there were loads of reprints made in the 1970s so it's likely to be one of them. Can you see the weave of the paper? If so it may be original - I hope it is.

If it turns out to not be worth much, I'd quite like to buy it. Sounds cool.

Elaine I'd buy a proper copy of it off of you (to frame and hang on my wall).

It's surprising how recently in relative terms spellings and place names were different. I bought last year an OS map of my local area that has reprints of the different old series maps, and even the one from the early 20th century was still using the older place names.
