I've had this from new.
It's a 2001 steel frame, Rockhopper Comp.

Like this.

It's been used for everything - MTB, tourer, commuter, hack.
Handles beautifully offroad, OK as a tourer but not ideal.
Steel Kona P2 rigid forks at the mo.

Have a new tourer/allrounder on the way, so that's out.
I've kept all the old bits so I could retro it, but it's not really old enough
and I can't really see the point.
🙂
I've already got a nice hardtail, so a straight MTB would be pointless.
I quite fancy a singlespeed, but I don't know if my knees will cope.
Alfine/Nexus sounds good, I need new wheels and groupset anyway and it'd make a great commuter/pub bike.

Xtracycle?

Anything I've missed?
I'd like to keep it in use.

I'd singlespeed it...

Theres only one way to find out if your knees will cope.. 😉

Watching with interest, I have a 1999 Giant Terrago that I've owned from new that I'm having similar thoughts about

I slapped a motor on my old Rockhopper. Makes for a great town machine.

I'd go for big fat smooth tyres (Geax Tattoo, Schwalbe Big Apple), singlespeed and a silly curvy mustache bar.

My 2003 Rockhopper is my loaner although with much reduced storage space it may need to go. Everything wobbles, bb, headset, hubs.

Single speed and skinny slicks - build a fast commuter/ town bike
