I have an old Klein Attitude V alu FS MTB which has seen better days. I bought about five years ago for £350 second hand. It definitely falls into the 'retro' category being 26 inch wheel.

I am only an occasional mountain biker these days having 3 other bikes all being road bikes. I do need that option however as sometimes my mates want to do an off road ride and so do I.

I took it to the local LBS yesterday and to solve all problems (hydraulic brakes need bleeding, bottom bracket broken up, new chain, new cassette) will cost around £150.

Is it worth tossing this old stead for a new one. I fancy a cotic Bfe (actually a soul but possibly could not justify the price on occasional use).

£150 gets you a working bike for occaisonal use.

How far does £150 +(+ price of your bike if you can sell it) go towards a similar/decent new bike?

Look at retrobike.co.uk before ditching your Klein.

You could learn to bleed brakes, and buy and fit the parts, buying tools if necessary for a lot less than £150
