Hi I have an old Cannondale I need to remove the lefty fork does anyone have any tips on the best way to get it off without damaging the bike? I can’t seem to find much online about it. (Only later ones)
It’s a Headshok SI from the early 2000’s
Undo and remove stem.
Undo bolts of fork clamps.
Drive out the steerer tube with an "ernie"
Thank you
I made my first 'ernie' out of a bit of MDF (it doesn't have to be a tube shape) but then I found a bit of plastic pipe that was close enough.
Don't be shy with the hammer either. Might take a few whacks to the removal tool.
it depends what lefty it is.
if it's a carbon lefty, or a lefty max for example, you can do as above, undo the steerer bolts whack out the steerer (with the wheel off though).
if it's an old DLR or DL, the lower clamp is rivited to the bottom of the steerer, so the steerer can't be removed.
for this, you need to take off the upper clamp.
Remove the lockout lever from the top of the fork. it'll either be a bolt, or you'll need to pull out the red rebound adjuster and then remove it.
Undo the clamp bolts.
Gently tap the clamp upwards until it's clear of the fork leg and the steerer.
whack the steerer down to remove the whole fork from the headset. make sure you hold the for or are ready to catch it.
Good point, apart from my Bad Boy with a Lefty Fatty I've only had the new Leftys.
