So after a few years taking my Ti Kili Flyer to the Alpes on my holidays which has cheapo Formula RXs on it (I put them on when I was in a jam and found they performed pretty well - no noticeable fade and they stop me at least), this year I am considering building up my Mk. 1 Soul just so I can say I have tried it on the big hills. I could swap my Formulas over, but on the other hand, my gold and black Mono Minis have been lying spare for a few years and would perhaps be fitting for my mid 2000's project. I bought them in abut 2004 as far as I remember - were these the ones which suffered on longer descents? I never noticed any problem in the UK...
Mono Minis should be OK as long as you don't expect too much. Original minis had heat problems for sure. Given the choice, I'd go for the Formulas. The RX were pretty good.
If you go with the minis, fit big rotors and organic pads to minimise heat.
Maybe I was a little demeaning to the Formulas - I picked them op for about 20 quid an end so assumed they were average. That said, they have always done the job. If my Cotic had brake hose guides that did not involve dismantling the brake, I would probably put the Formulas in, but so far, I have not touched them apart from new pads and they are still going well, so I am a little reluctant to take them apart.
I used Mono Minis in the Alps three or four years running with no complaints. If they're still in good nick, I'd be happy to use them again.
Do a fluid change and service before you go. You don't want to find that the fluid is past it half way down.
I survived the megavalanche with older style minis
You'll be fine, maybe consider biggers discs
