Old good brakes versus new bad ones

Old bike: Hope V2s

New bike: SRAM Dub8

Would you swap them over?  I say 'bad brakes' - these are apparently a mineral-oil version of Codes which everyone appears to hate.  They don't feel particularly positive, but I mean, they do stop me. I've not had the chance to really work them hard.

The V2s are brilliant though - no matter how fast I was going they just slammed me in the chest, it was a hoot. But, they are from 2007 and I know Hope are good with spares but it's surely a matter of time before something goes wrong.

Keep the old ones, they're still doing spares for Mono M4's (possibly OG M4 as well, I think they're cross compatible) so V2's should be provided for some time yet. The only thing that does seem to go obsolete are the levers but that's not the worst thing to upgrade.

I snapped a lever clamp on my Mono Minis probably 5 years ago. I was able to get a replacement lever body from CRC but that may have been one of the last ones. These V2s are the same vintage.  I also changed the seals on my Minis and there was corrosion in the seal seat so that is quite possible on the V2s.

V2's are Moto era are they not? That aside, corrosion can happen to any brake, I have a pair of juicies that just corroded for fun. As long as you're taking care of them they'll last, I have original issue M4 Monos (with the stainless pistons) still going strong and an Enduro 4 that just needs a strip down and clean to get working again.

Yeah.  I regret not speccing the vented rotors, they were cool.

As long as you’re taking care of them they’ll last

Er yeah, of course, I'm regularly bleeding them.... umm..

Kind of depends. Theres 3 V2 early versions, one of which, the first one is discontinued.

The difference to distinguish is on the top bit of the caliper(the triangular shaped bit) you'll see is plain. The 2nd and 3rd versions had a line down the middle, and as you see this one doesn't.

You can also se the difference in the piston seals. The originals are at the top, subsequent seals (2nd/3rd) are on the bottom and wont fit it. Getting those top seals only came from another Hope collector, Hope themselves have none.

Only found this out after buying the 2nd version seals - didnt fit-bugger, then the 3rd version seals-double bugger.  Email to Hope told me i was in bother.

So if your calipers are the ones without the line, you're stuffed.

I'm much the same as you- all my bikes have Formula The Ones from about 2010, because they're bloody superb and I love them. But they're just getting old and I'd really like to find something new that I like as much. I just cannibalised a set for parts purely due to normal wear.

There's basically no chance I'd replace them just on the basis that a bike I got had newer brakes- been there, done that. But if I could find a new brake that was even 9/10ths as good, whether in the shops or on a bike I bought, that'd be good enough. There's a whole spare brake in my toolbox, just in case!

I'm still using Mono M4 from 2008 on my Orange Five. They are brilliant, even compared to the modern XTR four pots on my Yeti.

Oh, and 2011 Formula R1 on my Giant Trance that have never once needed to bleed in 12 years.

Meh, I'd say just not letting salt attack them is enough, mine get bled about once every 5 years if that.

Mono Minis still doing service on my Big Dog - one lever is 2006 and the other 2007. May not be the most powerful but they stop me as required for the intended application.

Not the mineral version of Codes, just the new budget brake so that people less likely to do brake maintenance don't have to touch them as often as DOT brakes.

Regardless of that, if I had brakes I really like I would take them to the new bike

I'd put the old brakes on, sell the new brakes, keep the money aside for fixing/ replacing the hopes further down the line.

I'd stick with the old ones for now if they're good and life left in them. I've got a pair of XTR M988 levers and calipers that i've been using on my main bike for 6-7 years now (bought used). I have no plans to update as they're brilliant and I have enough spares to keep them going for a good while. Brakes are good to be able to trust, right?!
