I bought an old Dawes and would like to service the cup and cone bearings. However I can’t remove the cassette. It’s a 6 speed (freewheel style) seem to have a 8 notch lockring. I’m guessing I need an 8 notch tool and a chain whip

Just the tool and a vice to put it in. Put the tool in the vice facing upwards, put the wheel on the tool and turn the wheel anticlockwise (it'll no doubt require a degree of brute force).
