Having owned an old Specialized Single cross a long time ago, I fancied another do it all CX build. Wasn't sure want sort of bike to build so I revisited my store of old parts and remembered my old fav spot single speed frame.

Add in a few other spare components (B-Side 750b forks, Brooks Saddle) and a set of 700c wheels and drop bars from a friend and I'm rather like in the look of this.

WTB Radder tyres have just been delivered along with a set of TRP brake leavers (Brown hood/drilled levers and some Brooks bar tape)

TRP spyre callipers on order also...just need to decide on crankset and gear ratio

CX build

At this rate I might have to revisit a few older frames/bikes

Nice! You will now develop an unhealthy obsession with the muddiest singletrack you can find.

Would suggest a 9 or 10 speed setup with the smallest cassette/mech you can find, see the advice I received on my crappy shifting CX thread...

Looks great; itching to do something like this with on old steel 26" frame, but silly lockdown prices have temporarily put a hold on that.

What kind of room is there for tyres when using 700c wheels? Will you be able to get something meaty in there?

Just put the tyres on and it looks even better. I’ve gone for 700x40c and there’s ok clearance on the rear...stacks on the front.

Luckily this is a SS frame with horizontal drop outs so I can push them back.

Can’t work out how to add photos on the phone but hopefully you can see on Flickr via link above.

I like that. I've been thinking about doing the same to an old frame. Might be a nice little project.

Looking good so far.

You may need a shorter stem if that's a stem you used with straight bars. I found I had to pull the stem length in quite a bit - down to a 35mm from 80mm now,

It’s got a 70mm stem at the moment; I used to ride this frame with a layback seat post so it doesn’t feel too long at the moment. But will have to see how it rides.

Hopefully the brakes turn up tomorrow and then just need to decide on cranks.

I did this with a similar frame (old 26" Lava Dome with sliding dropouts) back in March, now with 3500km on it. It takes 27.5" wheels with 2.25 semi-slick Schwalbe Hurricanes with bags of room. I think I might go for narrower but knobblier tyres next time, it gets a bit 'interesting' in slop.

I have an old (1995) Kona Hahanna frame that's been sat in a damp garage for a decade. I think I have everything I need to resurrect it as an SS with drop bars and canti brakes...

Bit of an update on the build progress, just missing a BB and chain ring/sprocket.

TRP brake levers and TRP Spyre callipers added along with Brooks bar tape. I'm really loving the TRP products right now.

Then to add these Raceface cranks when the BB etc turn up. Then I get to mess around with saddle/bar position.

Then the head badge needs a litte TLC, going to sand it back and repaint with red back ground and black lettering.
